How to host a safe birthday party at your home

My daughter celebrated her 12th birthday last week! She has been begging for a party and I’ve been explaining to her that we can’t have one because of Covid. She kept asking and I kept saying no. Around March we were invited to a party and I ended up going just to see how they handled things and there were a lot of no no’s so I told myself I think I can pull one off with the proper planning so I did. Here is how to host a safe birthday party at your home. I didn’t say a covid safe party because there is the flu and other illnesses that may come up later.

First, don’t invite a lot of people. I kept the party very small. Only allowing 5 of her friends to come in total that was 6 kids. With their parents that would be 12. Most parents dropped their kids off so that only left the kids. Now she has more friends than that so what I did was take a group out to dinner the night before so that I didn’t have all of her friends at my home at one time.

I kept the party outside. No one was in the house we only came in to get the food and everyone ate outside. That kept people from being in my home. I also have a heavy-duty air purifier that works wonders.

I provided hand sanitizer, masks, and wipes to everyone and I also made sure to make people feel comfortable to either wear your mask or not. It was up to them. Most people wore their masks and I understand they don’t know my home or where I’ve been. Tips: You can make the masks a party favor.

I did cupcakes instead of a cake although we had cake (only for those I know personally). We put a candle on each cupcake and let all the kids blow out their own candle and make a wish. That way no one was hovering over the cake and everyone still could partake in the happy birthday song.

The food was a bit tricky. My friend paid for a catering service for me and we had him cook with his mask on. Everyone came in and served themselves after washing their hand and sanitizing it. I did a buffet style with only 2 people coming up at a time to get food. That way it wasn’t crowded.

The party was excellent. We did tie dies outside for the kids and played volleyball adults vs the kids. The adults won but lawd we had to take some breaks in between cause we old.

Details about the party will be tagged below. The food wasn’t that good so I will not tag where I got the food from. The burgers weren’t done all the way and for the cost of the food….I could have done a better job but again I didn’t pay for it so oh well. I give up on finding a caterer in Atlanta that can actually cook cook smh.

Signs came from Etsy

Tent from Amazon

The blankets and Pillows I already had.

Balloons from Party City thanks to the bestie for providing that.

Volleyball net from Amazon

The volleyball net was huge and took up most of my backyard but it was very good quality I must admit so I see lots of fun times this summer with it.

Tie Die came from Michaels. They have the kit and that was so much fun for the kids but boy is that a mess. Keep it outside you’ve been warned. I also bought the shirts from Michaels. I did 2 sizes each and some for the adults who actually got in on the fun.

Personalized lip gloss came from Etsy.

The cake came from Sweet Details. First time trying her just to have another cake person on deck. She also did the party favors.

Cupcakes came from Frantastic cakes. She doesn’t have a website and she doesn’t need one. She is the bomb! She has been my cake lady for years and she is the best there is. Her golden velvet….SHAT.

The hair was ok I won’t put who did it because it came apart and I who know nothing about hair had to put it back together.

Makeup was done by Nicole.

Rugs and pillows I had. Borrowed the table from a friend. Paper plates came from Party City.

Overall the party went well. Everyone kept their distance and their mask on and we were outside 80% of the time. You can have a safe party just know who you are inviting and set the atmosphere ahead of time. Also if you plan something in the winter during flu season then make sure you space everyone apart inside.

As long as the weather is good an outdoor party makes so much sense. So smart to give out cupcakes and avoid the line for cake.

Love the ideas. We’ve been celebrating birthdays over here quarantine-style for the 2nd time, but we made the most of it and it was all fun.

My son has a birthday coming up in May. I’m not sure I’m going to plan a party other than with family. I want to take him to do something but haven’t decided what I want to do yet. I’m high risk so even if they drop all masks, I’ll keep my guard up and continue practicing safe distance, hand washing, and masking up.

Great ideas! We just moved into a new home with a fairly good sized backyard and my sister celebrated her birthday here. It was just family and we were less than 10 people. Outdoor parties are always a good choice. Love those cupcakes too!

This was such a nice way to have a birthday party at home. These ideas would be good even if we were not in the middle of a pandemic.
