Watch out my sons on the road

I got my permit at 15. I remember I turned 15 that December and was in that Drivers office as soon as they opened back up in January. I was determined to get my permit and then my license. Why? I wanted to be independent. I wanted to be able to go whenever I needed to go and there is nothing like the freedom of driving yourself somewhere. Now I know there is Uber and Lyft these days but still it’s important to at least know how to drive just in case of an emergency. My son got his permit but it was a struggle at first. Here are my tips and tricks to getting a GA (Georgia) permit and all of the items you will need. So here my tips and watch out cause my sons on the road driving now.

Getting a Georgia permit

First, make sure your child has an ID I got my son his own ID at 13 years old. I wanted him to start carrying around identification so that he can go in and out of stores and pay for things with his card. He has his own debit card with money that he earns in there. I remember one time we went to a coach store and he wanted a wallet and the lady asked him for his ID for his card. She was pretty shocked that he had one (I was standing in a corner watching because I didn’t want any problems) so it’s good to get one for them. If your child has an ID it saves you from digging for their SS Card or their birth certificate. If you have that then all you will need is their school enrollment form. This form can be found on the Drivers website or the school may have one. My kids school already had the form so I just went to pick it up from them. I don’t think it can be filled out online you will need to go to the school and get it done but check with your state laws first.

Once you have that paperwork and your child is 15 you can go and get that permit. Here in GA in my area, the offices were closed on Monday (we went and I didn’t call first thinking for sure they were open M-F) Call first and verify the hours, if you need an appt, and what all you need. The website gave me info but it was kind of confusing and they never answered the phone in my area. So lets run over things you will need…

  • ID
  • SS Card if they don’t have an ID
  • Birth Certficate if they don’t have an ID
  • 2 things that verfiy your address if you don’t have an ID (insurance card will work and if you don’t have anything else use your car tag info that should be in your glove compartment that is a requirement for GA)
  • School Enrollment form (this can be found on your local website or some schools may already have it)

Here in GA there are two parts to the test. One is the signs and the other is questions and multiple choice answers. There was a practice test online and I highly suggest you take it also. I failed mine….

Moving on…Get the books out the office or download a copy of the driver book for your city/state. My son is lazy so he didn’t want to read the book. He found some test online that someone made up and refused to take the online practice test the first go round. My son is the type of person he thinks he knows everything and said his video games prepared him…boy stop. He failed the first time. So let me back up there are two parts to the GA test. 40 questions 20 for signs 20 for multiple choice answers. If you pass one part and fail the other you only have to take the part you fail over. He failed the multiple choice test but passed the signs. So he begged me to come back the next day and I told him I would not until he took the practice test online in front of me. He will not be wasting my money and my gas if he doesn’t take this seriouisly.

He fussed with me because he said the practice test online was too long and he didn’t want to do it. I said oh well…my gas is too expensive and I don’t feel like driving you back up there for you to fail again because you don’t want to listen. After some back and forth for a couple of hours he finally took the practive test online and we went back and he passed!

I was proud of him but you know I was like I told you if you had listened to me the first time but whatever thats how kids are.

Getting his permit is a huge help to me because I’m tired of driving y’all. Next stop is driving school because I don’t have the patience nor the nerves left to teach him. How many times did it take you to pass the test? Did you teach your kids yoursel for did you hire someone else?

Wow, can he not keep growing up so fast?! Dang. Also, brilliant idea for him to have a photo Id starting from a young age.

They sure do grow up quick. I’m going to have a teenager next year and my youngest will be 11 this fall. It’s crazy how quick it goes by.
