How to create a routine during the Summer months

It’s the last day of school for the 2018 – 2019 school year! I know you can’t hear my excitement but my ass is excited! No more me having to get up and drop off Monday thru Friday. My kids go to a different school that doesn’t have a school bus so I have to get up in the mornings and I’m not a morning person at all.

This summer we plan on sticking to a routine. One that is called camp Kita or Camp Mommy which are both the same. I want to put the kids in camp this summer but I’m not paying for a babysitter so that’s out. My kids have already been informed how our Summer routine is going to go but I wanted to give you all a preview in case you need some ideas of what to do with your kids all summer if they are home with you. If you aren’t home with your kids this summer still have them on a routine so they can be ready for when back to school starts. Which in our case is August 1st so basically 2 months out of school. Here is how to create a routine during the Summer months and then I will run down what mine will be.

How to create a routine during the summer months

First, figure out what you want your kids to do this summer that will help them keep their brains in check. I start there. What books do they need to read? What lessons do they need to learn to be prepared for the upcoming school year? What life lessons do they need to learn?

I know that my kids hate to read so I have a list of books that are appropriate for their age. BTW I have a son going to the 8th grade and a daughter going to 5th. I plan on going to the library and getting them both library cards. They will have to check out 4 books a month and will be required to read a book a week and then on Friday, they need to do a one page summary of the book to let me know they read it.

Lessons they will learn

When it comes to lessons they need for the upcoming year I plan on getting their math tutor to prepare things that a 5th grader will be learning and something an 8th grader will be learning. We will work on those and other things via Kahn Academy the entire summer. I also need them to learn how to type faster and learn the keyboard so they won’t spend years hours on a project.

Now when it comes to life lessons I definitely need my kids to know how to cook certain things, I also need them to focus on paying attention to their surroundings. My kids also need to learn how to work faster especially my son who thinks time stands still. I will be having timed things for him to do and if he doesn’t do it in time I will add to it until he can work faster. The key is to learn how to work faster and smarter as much as he can. When it comes to cooking my kids can do some basics but I need them to handle more. Not just to help me out but to help themselves because I want my daughter to know how to cook and my son needs to learn how to do the basics.

Camp Kita

Friday through Sunday they can be on their electronics until it dies. I will give them the freedom to be kids on the weekend. In the weekday…nope, nope and nope.

  • We will get up around 10 most mornings. I will collect all the electronics at night during the weekday at 10pm. They can stay up but they won’t be able to be on electronics so most likely they will go to sleep.
  • In the mornings they each will have 2 chores to do.
  • Reading will be for 30 min and then they will type me a paragraph of what they read on the computer so they can learn how to type and become familiar with the keyboard
  • We will then do something to enhance the mind which will be starting dinner, do something creative like help me with my job, do something social media-wise, help me set up a photo shoot, etc.
  • We will do a math problem or word problem from their worksheets that I will have for them until they can get their stuff at 4
  • There will be one trip out of the house a week which will include a new food spot, going to visit a park, doing a scavenger hunt somewhere, taking a day trip to the mountains, go to a new city in GA, etc.

We will take a day trip to Chattanooga and Asheville since it’s close and then I will be going home for a wedding renewal at the end of June. That’s all we will be doing as far as Summer travels. School starts back August 1st for us so we won’t have a lot of time to do things but we will make the most out of our Summer.

How will you be spending your Summer? Are you sending your kids to camp? Let me know in the comments below. Happy Memorial Day to everyone I will be taking off next week because my daughter has her dance recital and I want to get some things done social media wise so I will do that next week. See Y’all in June!

These are great ideas! My grandkids are only allowed to be on their electronics on weekends and then for a limited time. I’ve always been a big believer in routines. It just helps things flow even if the routines are slightly loosened during the summer months.

This is such a great post. I’m bookmarking it to use it this summer. I love how you run Camp Kita, I may have to start my own camp! I love the idea of taking away electronics but, letting them be kids too.

Oh man, we should do some sort of schedule, but it probably won’t happen. Summers are pretty lazy here. I should limit their electronics, but then they start bugging me, so I probably won’t. But my daughter likes to be outside at least, but only to a point, because it’s so hot.

Routine is SO important, especially over the summer. Ours is a bit lighter because it is vacation for the kids after all, but there is definitely one in place.

I’m up in the air on whether to do a routine or not but yours sounds great. We were very unstructured last summer and it was great – but an unpleasant shock when it was time to go back to school.

Sounds like you have a pretty solid plan to keep the kids busy and learning throughout the summer months. I’m trying to find a sport or hobby for mine to participate in, but I’m going to swipe a few of your ideas to fill the days too!

I’m trying really hard this year to create some type of schedule. The only downfall is the fact that my son is at his dad’s on and off all summer.

Creating a summer routine is an awesome way to keep the family organized and make sure there are fun activities for everyone! Summer is also a perfect time for more family bonding and for taking a special trip that will be remembered fondly by all for years to come!

Having a routine is a great idea, but make sure that it’s not getting boring. And you have amazing ideas! It was really fun!

My son is still not in school so for us, summertime is a smooth transition. Although, it is hard for me to stay focused when the weather is so beautiful and I want to be outdoors all the time!

Great ideas! I love the idea of collecting the electronics! I don’t typically enforce a bedtime during the summer. They like to go to the dollar movies on Tuesdays or Wednesdays but the rule is they have to get themselves up and ready for us to leave in time.
