Take Advantage of Virtual Museum and Art Gallery Tours

Early on during quarantine, museums, tourist attractions, schools, and educational organizations worked quickly to provide a variety of online resources. These resources allow students and their families to virtually visit areas of interest. Art galleries and museums virtual tours are available for the public to access for free. This is a great way to see a wide variety of attractions without leaving home.

The Getty Museum, for example, challenged people quarantining at home to recreate famous works of art. These images have gone viral on social media and are a true testament to how creative people can be when they’re bored. The public has been able to experience galleries and museums that they may not have previously had access to. Making culture accessible in such a hands-on way, is one positive side of having to shelter in place. It also allows those who otherwise may not have had the opportunity, to experience fun ways to travel without leaving home.

Create a Backyard Oasis

Enjoy a Tropical Vacation at Home

If you have access to a patch of land in your backyard, it doesn’t take much to create a backyard tropical oasis. Simply put out lawn chairs, add in some plants, and put on some music. Head to Pinterest to find a refreshing cocktail you’ve never tried before then add the ingredients to your next grocery and errand run or delivery. You can also pick up some tropical plants at your local nursery to add to the tropical vacation ambiance. Grill up some spicy Jerk Fish, pour that cocktail, sit back and relax.

Get Back to Nature and Camp Outside

All you need to recreate a camping trip in the mountains is a tent, a few blankets or a sleeping bag, some S’Mores ingredients, and a little bug spray. When you can’t be out in nature, consider putting a tent out in the backyard and lighting up the fire pit to roast hot dogs and marshmallows under the stars. Even if you don’t have space outside, you can make do with a beach tent, and marshmallows will roast over a gas stove just as well as they would over an open flame. The key to creating fun ways to travel without leaving home is to have an open mind.  Being resourceful and realizing that while the conditions may not be ideal, you and your family are safe at home and are doing your part to keep everyone around you healthy.

Get a Taste of the World

One inexpensive way to experience the world without leaving home is through subscription boxes. Monthly boxes like Universal Yums, Globe In and Raddish Kids bring the whole world right to your front door.  If you’ve got a sweet tooth, Universal Yums include snack foods from around the globe. In each box, you’ll receive a booklet that tells you a bit about the country with recipes and fun trivia. You’ll also receive a variety of sweet and savory snacks each month. This is a great way to discover the world one taste bud at a time.

The Globe In subscription box brings to your door, artisan-made lifestyle products that will add a touch of culture and luxury to your home. Globe In is a fun way to discover more about the style, tastes, and art of a variety of countries around the world.

Finally, if you’re looking for fun ways to travel with kids without leaving your home, Raddish Kids is a monthly, kid-friendly subscription box. Designed for kids ages four and up, it teaches history, geography, culture, and of course cooking skills. Each month recipe cards, educational materials, a fun kitchen accessory, and a country patch are delivered to your child. You’ll be able to work together to create three delicious dishes from the featured country and discover more about the world while having fun and eating together. This is a great way to incorporate school at home with life skills and one-on-one family time.

Start Planning Your Next Vacation

While you may not have any trips on the books right now, it’s never too early to begin planning another vacation. One great way to get started is by visiting the online chamber of commerce or tourism organization for locations on your travel bucket list. Get on their mailing list, order the brochures, or simply go online or to Pinterest to learn more about where you’d like to go.

Start by compiling an itinerary and creating a list of must-see and do attractions for your trip. Vacation planning can often help change your mindset and get you thinking about all of the fun things you’ll be able to do once the quarantine is lifted. Plus you may discover someplace new you hadn’t considered before, so do that research and find new places to explore.

Get Cooking in the Kitchen

If you’d like to explore the world beyond kids cooking subscription, take some time to look up recipes for some of your favorite vacation meals and cocktails. Whether you miss that Pescado Zarandeado and refreshing Michelada in Puerto Vallarta or you can’t get enough of those Shrimp and Grits from Charleston, get those recipes, order the groceries and get to cooking. Bring the flavors of your favorite locations home or even try a new recipe or learn a new cooking technique you’ve always been curious about. Now during quarantine is the ideal time to step outside of your comfort zone, try something new while you may have the extra time.

Hopefully, soon enough, life will be somewhat back to what it was before and we’ll be rebooking those vacations, making those reservations and traveling. In the meantime, as we take stock of all that we have, all that we’re grateful for and how fortunate we are to be healthy and safe, it’s a great time to create fun memories at home with the ones we love.
