Should I hire an interior designer?

When it comes to designing your home you want it to look fab. My house looked like I just graduated from college and threw some furniture in it. I hated that I had mismatched furniture because I didn’t know what I was doing. For my birthday last year I decided to stop playing games and hire a real interior decorator. Should I hire an interior designer? Let’s find out!

Should I hire an interior designer?

First, make sure you can afford them. Interior designers cost a lot. I do mean a lot. I won’t tell you how much I spent on my bedroom and my dining room because I did barter for some things but let’s just say it was enough to go on 4 good vacations for the year. I’m assuming they cost because they come with everything you need. The painter, the electrician, the put console together guy, etc. If you do it on your own and you don’t have a boo then you are left to trying to find a painter over there and someone to put together a table over here and it becomes tiring. Hiring an interior designer is a one-stop-shop type of thing that as a single woman I needed.

Find who matches your style. A lot of people were telling me about a few people on Instagram but their style was too loud for me or to eclectic for my taste. Browse suggestions but look up some on your own. Put in the hashtag that fits your city (#interiordecoratoratlanta) or just google some. I found mine by way of doing photography and a match was made in heaven or hell if you look at the amount of money I spent but I digress. Make sure you get one that fits your budget, understand your needs, and will let you find your style and not try to put their style on you. That’s the one thing I loved about the designers I worked with they let me do the talking and let me choose what I thought looked good. I said I wanted a beach themed dining room and they delivered! I said I wanted a yellow and grey bedroom and they got it right the first time.

Now a lot of people offered to help me design my home but I wanted it done all at once. I am not a patient person so I didn’t want to wait for someone or have to go furniture shopping I needed someone to do all the work for me (that’s what you pay for when you hire an interior designer btw) A couple of friends said Kita you are spending way too much money but I know what I wanted. Stick to what you want because it’s the home that you have to live in.

Here is what I learned when hiring a designer

  • Cheap furniture is just that. Start with good furniture so that you don’t have to keep buying stuff. I love me some Tarjay and Walmart but the furniture from there didn’t last long and I don’t know how to touch furniture up so many of my things started falling apart after just a year.
  • They know what looks good from what doesn’t. It takes a special eye to know that the table you bought is to small for the room or that the mirror makes the room look bigger depending on what wall you use.
  • They come with all their people. I am so glad I didn’t have to hire anyone extra to do anything they did the painting and the electrician work
  • Putting a room together takes at least a month. All the pieces gotta look good and some things are made specifically for you

Now if you are good with decorating you don’t need to hire anyone. I know a few good decorators online who are awesome at what they do. If you can’t afford a couple hunnits to spend on hiring a professional you might want to consider Havenly. I hired them to do the rest of the rooms in my house. Here is what I love about them.

  • it’s one price to decorate an entire room and you get to pick the designer that matches your style
  • They put everything on a board and it’s a one-stop shop for everything you need for the room. This saves people like me so much time from having to go to 50 million websites
  • All you gotta do is take a picture of your room with your cell and send it and they create these amazing look alike rooms so that you can decorate the room exactly how it is.

I can’t show you the before because it looks horrible but the picture below shows exactly how my room looks and how to decorate it with the colors I want.

They made this replica for me based on the pics I sent and then sent me everything I needed for the room right there in one place. It’s way cheaper than hiring someone although I don’t have anyone to put the light fixture in or put anything together *cries* That is the only downfall I have when it comes to doing this on my own but havenly is cheaper and they did a great job.

My living room isn’t finished yet but once it’s done I will come back and update you so make sure you check out my Instagram for more info. All the pieces haven’t arrived as of yet due to Rona.

Overall I wanted a space that I can come home to and feel at home and it never felt like that before I got my rooms done. Now that I got just those two rooms completed I don’t want to even touch them lol. It feels good to have rooms completed without mismatch stuff or things that don’t belong together. It’s not even about entertaining either it’s about feeling good in the home you pay for.

Ask me any questions below about my experience and who I worked with. Will be glad to tell you. Do you know how to decorate?

I actually love decorating so I won’t need to hire an interior designer. Unfortunately, it still costs a lot of money to buy all the pieces I want so it’s a work in progress. That being said I definitely did consider hiring an interior designer before because as much as I like decorating it is nice to have someone do all the work for you.

I can’t wait to see your home when its done. Those pictures look great!

Hiring an interior designer is a very expensive undertaking. I live in an older home and it needs to be furnished in a way that suits the older style and we like to do it ourselves.

I feel like I need an interior designer for a couple of odd shaped rooms in my house. New furniture might help too.

I would love one ONE DAY. I know it’s expensive though. I probably wouldn’t do it til the kids were older and less likely to break things and make messes everywhere.

Yes. The answer is yes! If you can afford it. I would in a heartbeat if I had the money, I put together our current apartment 20 years ago and it is not as functional as a designer could do!

My sister hired an interior designer and her house is amazing! I would love to hire one for my place. I’ll have to check out Havenly since an interior designer is out of my price range. Your living room is going to be gorgeous!

I think it’s a good idea. I know it isn’t going to be cheap but if the person can afford it, I am sure it will be worth it!

I love decorating and I get decorating ideas online. But I would consider hiring an interior designer if his/her fee fits my budget. 🙂

I would need an interior decorator. I can appreciate nice things, but I don’t have an eye for putting things together, nor the time or inclination to learn it.

I can say YES if you can afford it but I am glad that I don’t need to hire an interior decorator because my husband knows how to do it for me.

We are planning this summer to renew our house and this was my dilemma too. I think I could try an online decorator. Maybe it will work for us!

I think this is a decision to be made together if you’re married. I can imagine an interior designer being costly; however, if they can accomplish what you’re looking for, and you can afford it, I say go for it!

I would love to hire an interior decorator. I’ve done a decent job with my home, but I won’t ever be called an interior designer.

I went to school for interior design and did have a teacher who made a ton! While I didn’t fully persue it, I do enjoy decorating and styling my own home.

I’m terrible at decorating. I totally know what I like, but I have a hard time putting it all together. I’ve used an interior decorator multiple times to help me choose paint colors, rearrange furniture and tell me what I can do to improve my house for resell. I think they’re totally worth it if you can find the right one.

I would LOVE to hire an interior designer since I am not creative at all. ! Of course, both my husband and I would need to agree to it.

Honestly, I’ve considered it in the past. My husband and I love traditional and coastal styles so it’s not always easy to find this combination.

Because of who I am, I would never spend money on hiring an interior designer, but my older sister would in a heartbeat. If your home decor is a big deal to you, I would say, heck yes, DO IT!

I think an interior designer helps a lot and makes everything easier, but some of us are very good at decorations by themselves!

I think having an interior designer is really worth it. If I only have the budget, I will definitely want a designer for my home.

It would be wonderful to hire one someday even if it’s expensive. Though I really prefer doing things my way and will just ask for help in certain areas I don’t know.
