A day in Athens, GA

Athens, GA is the home of where my daughter wants to go to school at. The home of UGA. She has had her mind set on that school ever since she was a little one. She wants to attend their veterinarian school. Whatever she does it will be in medicine I know that already. Every year we attend the UGA basketball game with an organization that focuses on kids who have lost a parent. We joined when my hubs first died and every year since we make it a tradition to go. This year it was a bit difficult because I had a photo shoot that morning in Greenville, SC but we made it work and made it in time to see most of the game. UGA played the Florida Gators and I can tell you this…there are a lot of Gator fans in Georgia.

Every time I go to Athens I do a little site seeing, a little shopping, and of course a lot of eating. Since I have been going for the past 3 years I gathered up some great spots to eat at. If you are ever thinking about spending a day in Athens, GA here are some of the things you must do.

A day in Athens, GA

Let’s talk about the attractions first.

The Morton Theatre

This is one of the oldest surviving vaudeville theatres in the United States. Build owned and operated by an African American this theatre operates as a rental facility hosting live theatre, music concerts, church services, weddings, dance concerts, receptions, seminars, awards shows, pageants, community events, and more.

UGA Historic North Campus

Of course, you have to visit the campus when you go to Athens. This isn’t just any campus this is the original UGA. The nations first state-chartered university.

Georgia Museum of Art

Founded in 1945, the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia houses a permanent collection of more than 10,000 works of art as well as 20 to 25 temporary exhibitions a year.

State Botanical Garden of Georgia

One of my favorite spots in Athens is this place. This 313-acre botanical garden on the Middle Oconee River serves as a cultural, educational and recreational facility and is one of Athens’ most-visited attractions. Numerous themed display gardens include the Flower Garden, International Garden, Heritage Garden, Shade Garden and more.

The tree that owns itself

I thought this was a very unique attraction because no one actually owns the land that the tree grows on. The tree pays no taxes, is protected by the community and rests securely in its own enclosed garden-type lot. In addition, this unique tree has been featured in Ripley’s “Believe it or Not” and has received regular attention from newspapers and magazines from around the world.

Now let’s talk about where to eat

Home.Made

This place was hard to catch open at first. I went one weekend and didn’t realize that they were closed on a Sunday so I knew the next time I was in town I would have to catch it on a Saturday or Friday. May I direct your attention to the Shrimp and Grits. I am from Charleston, SC so when I see that combo on a menu I am going for that. Try it next time you go to Athens…you may want to take a trip up there just for that.

Last Resort Grill

The brunch here is the perfect way to start your trip. I loved their quiche which you don’t hear about too often. I have heard that the white chocolate cheesecake is the bomb. I haven’t had a chance to get that but next time I go I will make sure that I do.

Taqueria Tsnumai

So my son’s tutor lives in the area and I wanted to try somewhere that she recommended. She said this was the spot so we tried this the last time we went and she was right. This is the spot. I tried 3 different tacos one was the Teriyaki chicken taco OMG….an explosion of flavors in your mouth is all I can say to describe this.

The Pine

The Pine is another great spot. I actually haven’t been to this one but I have heard great things. We will be traveling to Athens in a few weeks for a photoshoot so I will be dining here.

When I go out of town I normally stay at Hyatt or Marriott but when you are visiting smaller towns you may want to forego your regular stay and stay somewhere new and fun. My two recommendations are…

Hotel Indigo

The decor in person doesn’t do these pictures justice. The unique architecture is what I truly loved about this place.

The Colonels B&B

This spot is perfect for a quick getaway with your boo. It’s a great place to sneak away for the weekend to relax and spend time with the one you love. I’m hoping by next Valentine Idris Elba and I can sneak away to this spot for a weekend getaway. A girl can dream right lol.

Athens is a beautiful town about an hour and a half from where I live. It’s the perfect getaway for a day. Have you ever been to Athens, GA?
