Da Chuck has come to Atlanta: Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen and Bar

For a second I thought I was home in Charleston, SC. The food, the people, the atmosphere…but sadly I was in Atlanta. I don’t hate Atlanta (side eye) but home will always be Charleston. Da Chuck has come to Atlanta by way of Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen and Bar.

Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen and Bar

First off I’m from Charleston so ain’t nobody gonna tell me bout my food but me right lol. You got your red rice, okra soup, okra perloo, shark bites, and chewies. Before we get into the food check out this video that takes you on a small journey of what this place is all about. Then I will give you my honest opinion, questions I asked the owners, and if I will be back.

Ok, let’s get into the food. I tasted all of their main dishes. Let’s start with the rice cause rice is a staple from where I am from. We eat it daily! The rice was cooked to perfection and the gravy on top…geesus. This ain’t got shat on the shrimp and grits.

This is called the Shrimp and Crab Gravy!

Before I go further it would help if y’all had the menu right.

Now I love eggrolls and this tops all others with just the right amount of rice and cabbage I ain’t gonna mention that shrimp is in this or as we say in Charleston…in dis.

Everything I tasted was good! I only hated one of the drinks but the rest of em…yassssss

Atlanta’s newest eatery brings “Gullah Geechee inspired soul food” to College Park. The owners are Juan and Gee Smalls who showed us love from the time we got in there til the time we left which is the Charleston way.

Ok, lets get into some more nitty gritty.

  • It’s right by the airport in the College Park area. So I live outside of Atlanta and it took me 40 min to get there from the east side not bad and worth the trip
  • Parking is a little weird but they do have parking in the back
  • The bar is bananas get yourself some tight up drink. If you saw in the video I made that face it was because that thing was strong it had me tight up.
  • Know some thangs about the culture before you come in asking all types of questions. A quick google search will break down some of the foods we eat and what’s on the menu and why it’s named certain ways.
  • Example it’s not fish it’s fush, and okra is something we eat a lot so it’s on the menu in various ways
  • chewies can be with or without ice cream. I’m lactose so I got mine without.
  • I recommend everything on the menu but if you must know my favorites it’s Red Rice, the Shark Bites, Shrimp and Crab gravy, Jam up wings, Okra soup, and Fried cabbage. Order all of that! The chewies will make you wanna slap your mama and ask her why she ain’t never made that for ya
  • My kids got a Charleston mama so they eat most of this but kids are welcome and let them try a few of these you can’t go wrong with macaroni and chicken
  • You can rent the spot out if you need to for a party. Guess where I may be celebrating my 30+…I ain’t telling y’all my age
  • prices are excellent! I took home dinner for 2 days and it was under 50 bucks!
  • Vegan options are available!

I asked the owners “Why open up a spot in Atlanta and not in Charleston?”

Simply put they said because Charleston people can cook their own food…(true) first thing we gonna say is why go somewhere to eat when we can cook it ourselves. It’s also nice to bring some different cultures to the Atlanta area. Will there be more Virgil’s opening up? There might be stick with me and I will keep you posted.

Get her as your waitress! She made sure my food was on point. Did I mention I got a whole 2 days worth of meals to go? Chilleeeeeeee

Will I be back?

Hell Yeah! I will make that drive because first of all Atlanta ain’t got that many soul food spots that are good. Also, I know my seafood is fresh here. Go check it out and tell them Kita sent you!

Oh this must be legit because you are particular. I don’t know much about the Charleston culture, it’s on my list so I do plan to visit. I do love and appreciate good southern food. I’m adding this to my ATL food list.
