The Best Plants to Keep in Your Home if You Have Allergies

Tis the season. It’s spring and allergies are running rampant. You can step out the door and all of a sudden feel like your face is going to explode because you start sneezing so violently. Nobody wants to deal with allergies however, it’s still nice, especially during spring and summer, to have plants in the house to liven it up. If you have allergies, this can be an issue and sort of a pain or disappointment. If you have the same problem we do at my house, here are a few plants you might try out in order to spruce up the house without sneezing your lungs out.

It’s important to point out that the following plants are not only (usually) allergy-friendly but, they actually help combat allergies by keeping the air cleaner. Each person reacts differently to certain plants. This is why I’m saying that the average person can usually benefit from these plants. I can’t say for 100% certainty that every single person can though, just so I don’t get y’all comin’ back hollerin’ at me about these plants makin’ you sneeze.

Marginata

This plant is great for helping clear humidity out of a home. Which is nice for me here in Georgia. It’s a low maintenance plant which means, it’s hard to kill. This is also good for me since I don’t have much of a green thumb. It clears the air of two chemicals specifically: formaldehyde and benzene.

Peace Lily

Beware if you have pets, especially cats, this plant can be toxic to them. However, for humans, it’s a gorgeous plant to have in the home and is really easy to take care of. You don’t need to worry about light or water until the leaves droop a bit, then you know it’s time to feed it. It removes the same chemicals out of the air as marginata but, also clears trichloroethylene as well.

Bamboo Palm

Many of us are familiar with this plant because it’s usually pretty noticeable when placed in a room. It can get pretty tall and is considered a floor plant. This plant is just as easy as all the other and only needs to be watered every few weeks. This plant purifies more than the other plants already mentioned. In addition to the other chemicals mentioned, this plant also helps purify the air of chloroform, carbon monoxide, and xylene, along with functioning as an insect repellent.

Some other great plants you might like to grow or take a swing at are:

  • Gerber Daisies
  • Swedish Ivy
  • Janet Craig
  • Chinese Evergreen
  • Areca Palm
  • Lady Palm
  • Golden Pothos

There are actually quite a few other plants out there that are safe for allergy sufferers like me. These are some of the more popular ones utilized in many households simply because they have more than one function. If you seem to start having some allergy issues after you purchase one of these plants, don’t hesitate to remove it and see if it’s the culprit. As mentioned, everyone will react differently to each plant however, these plants have a consistent history for helping with allergies more than adding to them.

I’m not the best at house plants, but I think I might try my hand at growing a peace lily because I need some greenery inside the house. The added benefits of it filtering out our air naturally is a huge plus for me since my kids suffer from asthma and I keep an air purifier running this time of year.
