Take a trip with me as I spend Spring Break in Savannah

How was your Spring Break? The kids and I spent Spring Break in Savannah, GA and we also brought some friends along. We ate, slept, and ate some more. I mean when you are in Savannah that is just what you do. I will be breaking down the trip from the time we got into the time we left so come along with us as I tell you about our 3 days in Savannah!

Spring Break in Savannah

Hotel Stay

I’m picky about where I stay. I have to stay at the best. Motels just won’t do for me. Normally when I go out of town I stay at a Hyatt or a Marriott very rarely do I do any other hotels. Here is what I look for in a hotel stay….customer service, cleanliness, and location. All three have to line up with my needs in any city I go to. When we went to Savannah and stayed at the Hyatt on the River. I picked this spot because of the view. Cost wise it’s a bit expensive but if you opt not to get the river view you may save a little bit. The hotel was gorgeous inside and when I say gorgeous I mean that.

Check in was a breeze. You can do it on your phone. Here are some more details

  • There is valet parking. Pay for it so you won’t have to worry about finding your car
  • This hotel is within walking distance of everything so once you park you can eat, relax, and shop right in the area
  • They ran out of towels on our second night there so I had to wash with a face towel…I wasn’t happy about that
  • The pool was inside but the chlorine from the pool….geesusĀ it was strong so we opted not to swim in it because I felt that if we had a swim in the pool our skin would fall off
  • The food in the bar area was pretty good. My son ate the burger from there and I had a flatbread
  • Beds were comfy so I got some good sleep. If you sleep on the side of the river sleep with the shade closed because when that sun comes up……

On a scale of 1-10 I would give this hotel an 8.5 only because of the towel situation and then the elevator broke one of the days we were there. Other than that this was a great place to stay and I would stay here again.

Beach time

After we checked in we went straight to the beach! Tybee Island was about a 20 min drive so we opted to go there as soon as we got in. I checked the weather (make sure you do this when going anywhere) and it was supposed to rain on that Wed so we opted to go to the beach asap. The beach was cold as hell and I don’t know why people were in that cold water. We walked along the beach and I even saw one of my blog buddies Trina who was there on vacation with her family. I took some photos on the beach of my daughter which I will show you all on Monday because it’s her birthday pics

We hadn’t eaten since we got in so we decided to go to a place called the Cotton Exchange. Now looks can be deceiving that is why it’s best not to judge a book by its cover. The place looked run down but it was actually pretty good. I had the Shrimp and Grits and my friend had the pasta. I will say myĀ meal was good but the Low Country Shrimp and Grits I make at home…much better. The wait time was about 45 min and we took that time to check out the scenery around the river and do some selfies

After we left dinner we went back to the hotel for the night but I could not resist a night shot of the area

The Funky Brunch Cafe

We woke up late so we went to a place called The Funky Brunch Cafe. It’s a funky little place about 10 min from where we stayed. You can make your own breakfast at the table. This wait was about an hour but it went by quickly. Here are some details

  • The pancake comes in a squirt bottle and it’s enough to make about 6 pancakes so two people can share it
  • The price was decent and they have an array of toppings for you to choose from
  • Kids will love it here but I don’t recommend it for kids under 5
  • The food was okay…it wasn’t the best but I went for the experience so if anything take the kids to make their own pancake
  • You have to pay to park….so be aware of that
  • I didn’t like that they didn’t have warm syrup readily available you have to ask for it
  • Sweet tea and lemonade mix was the bomb
  • I had the french toast. It was better than the pancakes in my opinion

We spent the rest of the evening relaxing and soaking up some of the Savannah air

The Wilkes House

So on Thursday, we checked out of the hotel (got down there on Tuesday). We decided to go to the Wilkes House after many people recommended it. We checked out at around 10 and got to the wilkes house at 10:30 the place didn’t open until 11am. The line was around the corner…..on a Thursday. This is the middle of the week I was not expecting there to be a line. We got in line at 10:30 and we weren’t seated until 1pm. Yes you heard that right. I took the kids back to the car with me and my friend stood in line because they weren’t happy. Was it worth the wait?

Spring Break in Savannah - The Wilkes House

You betcha ass it was. I don’t have the patience for anything but I needed to wait because if the line was this long it must be good and it did not disappoint. I mean the food that they brought you….geesus. All cooked by one cook who has been there for over 40 years. The food reminded me of my home Charleston,SC. They brought the chicken to the table, sweet potato soufle, greens, black eyed peas, cabbage, okra gumbo, mac and cheese, ribs, etc. I can’t even name all of what they had on the table. There was Sweet Tea to drink and it didn’t even need sugar. We were rolling out that place full and then we had to drive back. The place is so good I will take a drive up there and back just to eat. Yes, it was that good!

  • They only take cash so be prepared for that
  • They didn’t charge the 3 year old that was with us so I don’t know what age the kids are at. Adults were 23 kids half price
  • You can’t tip the waitresses. I didn’t like that shat because I like to give tips into the hands of those that serve us. They have a communal tip basket
  • They don’t have anything but sweet tea, unsweet tea, and water so don’t ask for any soda lol
  • It’s all you can eat but you won’t be able to eat but one go round
  • You are supposed to sit with strangers but no strangers sat at our table because we had the max amount of people for a table
  • Bring a chair while you wait if you can’t stand for long or bring a friend who can stand in the line to relieve you
  • You pay at the front once you eat
  • Parking is horrible we had to park on the street about 2 blocks from the spot and we had to feed the meter twice

I give this place a 10 out of 10. The food was awesome and it’s a must if you ever go to Savannah

That was it for our trip. We had a great time and we ate you can’t ask for a better trip than that.

I’m glad you had fun in Savannah. I used to live there and hated lol. It is a good place to visit, just not to live. I will say I miss Tybee Island. I use to go there to clear my head and write. Savannah downtown is beautiful with alot of culture.

I’ve never thought to go to Savannah Georgia before, but that good food at the Wilkes House is making me want to go just for that. I love great dining experiences. I’d have to mentally prepare myself for that wait though.

The hotel is a beauty. Iā€™m at #FatSnacks lover so I would have been right in that line at The Wilkes House. I was drooling at the list of food you rattled off.

    We had a staycation.

I love Savannah and Tybee Island! The food is always awesome and there is so much to do. Parking is always a nightmare but that good food is worth the inconvenience.

Savannah Georgia is one place we haven’t had the pleasure to visit just yet. From the looks for your photos looks like we should be planning a trip down there very soon.

I’ve always wanted to go to Savannah. One day, I hope. That hotel looks so pretty. All the food places you mentioned have intrigued me. I need to check out The Wilkes House for sure. I’m surprised it was so dang crowded on a Thursday though. Whew!

A friend of mine lives in Savannah and I love all the pictures she has. Everything there is so pretty and so out of the ordinary. I think if I ever get down to visit my friend again I may have to stay at the hotel. Food there looks outrageous!

I’ve been to Savannah once one a family vacation when I was about 14. Even at that age I enjoyed the history the city had to offer.
