How I’m organizing my pantry

This is not one of those posts that will show you tips on how to organize your pantry or how to get started. I’m just telling you what I did one Saturday afternoon because I was tired of living in a pantry hoarder paradise. I will break down where I bought all of my stuff at and then I will tell you the moment I cried. Here is how I’m organizing my pantry.

Organizing my pantry

Why I decided to organize my pantry

My pantry is kind of small and I hadn’t cleaned it out that well since I moved in two years ago. I just kind of threw things in there and hope that I found it when I needed it. I have two kids who go into the pantry on a regular to look for snacks and to pack up their lunches in the weekday. I bought a box of crackers one day and I know I did but my daughter couldn’t find it in the pantry. Things were missing like socks so I knew that I had to take a Saturday afternoon and get my pantry life together. I didn’t do the pantry organization like you are used to seeing with all the pretty baskets and the pretty containers because number 1…I am not the one to do that and number 2 that costs me way too much money so I kept it simple and made the closet neat. I am now in order and I couldn’t be happier. Everything has its place and I can now find things readily when I need it. Another thing I was doing was buying the same things over and over again. Later in the post, I will tell you why that made me cry.

The Spice Rack

I bought this on sale a when I first moved in but I never put it up.

organizing my pantry

I gave my daughter the task of putting it together. I guess she did it correctly….it hasn’t fallen down yet so that’s good lol.

I moved all of my baking goods from my closet to the rack because I needed more space in my closets for my cups and wine glasses…my wine glasses needed a home so don’t judge me. I don’t know how I like this on the door hanging literally hanging out like this but for now, it will do.

Plastic Containers for dry goods

I love the plastic container look but I can’t afford the plastic container look. Do you all know how much those things cost? I picked mine up at various places including home goods, bed bath and beyond, Target and the Container Store. All of them cost about the same no matter where you go but I found that home goods were slightly cheaper by a few dollars. I used the containers for cereal and snack. It’s easier for me to put the containers in the pantry because both kids can reach it without going on top of the fridge. This also keeps down boxes of stuff all over the place. I also love the easy pour container because the kids seem to make less of a mess when they have control over the container vs the box with the bag. You don’t know how many cheerios and stuff I find under my fridge, cabinets and deep places in my kitchen we shall not speak of.

Pantry Organization

I did a story on instastories and a lot of people asked me where I got the liners on the shelves. Let’s talk about that in the next section.

Pantry Organization

The Container Store shelves

So my shelves are not original to the house. When I moved in I got all of my closets done in the entire house. Since I was already paying an arm and a leg I might as well had pay some toes and fingers and do the pantry shelves too. The liners came with the shelves…I mean after the final cost they might as well had thrown that in for free. I love that the closets are adjustable and I can move them around and do various looks with them.

I didn’t buy baskets I just organized what I had

So by now, most people would be telling you about their basket life and how they did their closet from the dollar store and all that stuff…chile, please. I already spent enough on the cereal containers so I decided to forgo the baskets for now and focus on just organizing my closet as is. I made sure all of my can goods were together, all of my baking goods were together, and all of my other stuff in a neat format so I can just grab and go.

organizing my pantry

All of my soups as you can see is in one spot. All my Ziploc bags (I had a lot) in one spot, and all of my other stuff neat and readily available for me.

At the bottom there is a shelf/basket combo I use these for snacks so the kids can just go in them grab what they need for school and after school and we are good to go.

I got this from the Container Store because I was going to line up the bottom but changed my mind so I can put my water jugs down there so I only bought one.

The moment I cried

Have you ever been hungry? Well, I have and the amount of food I threw away had me taking a moment to sit down and not only thank God but also be upset that I, who was once hungry, threw away 3 big bags of outdated food. That is the main reason I needed to tackle my closet because I was buying things and not really looking to see what I had and then I ended up not using a lot of stuff and having it sit there and then go out of date. I had things in my closet since 2016 that had expired big time. I can’t believe I got that bad with the stuff. Now that I am organized I won’t be throwing out things and using what I buy because I now know what I have. Having food wasted just made me upset because there are so many that go hungry!

When was the last time you cleaned out your pantry? Would you buy the baskets and containers to organize with?

Oh how I wish I had a pantry, but alas I don’t. I am sure if I had one, it would be a big mess though – just like my cabinets are LOL!!

My pantry is next on my list! A few days ago I cleaned out my spice drawer – yes, I have an entire drawer dedicated to spices. One spice – way in the back – was dated 2014! What??? I hated throwing out all those spices but my drawer looks so neat now. You did a great job with your pantry.

It’s amazing how we add and add to our pantry without checking the dates and rotating stuff. Before you know it we’re stuck with a bunch of expired food. I recently cleaned mine out to make space for wait for it – MORE FOOD.

Thanks for doing a blog post on this. You have motivated me to get my butt in gear and get my pantry cleaned and organized. I’ll definitely be hitting up Home Goods soon for a few plastic containers for cereal and dry goods.

My pantry is really small too. I see everyone putting wonderful cartons or baskets on the floor of the pantry for more storage, but where then do you place the trash bin? That is where I put the trash bin as I have no spot in my kitchen, which is oddly laid out.

We’ve lived in this house for a year, so I cleaned it out when we packed and then moved. It still looks pretty good considering it is a year later.

Organization is so key to really see clearly what you have. I can relate and will definitely have to get into organizing my things very soon as well!

We got our kitchen done a few years ago, and slowly I have collected those containers that cost the same everywhere. I wanted the ones that had the stainless steel looking top because they are on the counter in the kitchen – not in a pantry. But I love that look. Anyway I was waiting to get around to what made you cry. Because dropping a bag of flour on the floor made me cry one time. You wouldn’t believe how that can explode everywhere. Anyway so now flour is in a plastic container instead of a plastic bag. Hopefully that won’t happen again. I’m one of those that has to go to the store for everything because I never have a back up. So I very rarely have to throw anything away unless it was an ingredient to a never again recipe.

Girl if I only had a pantry… One of the reasons I can’t stand apartment life. I can not tell you how many times I pick something from the back of one of my kitchen cabinets to find out it expired 1 – 2 years ago. The thought of removing the cereal boxes from the top of my fridge would be a dream come true too! Your pantry looks great! No baskets for me. I am they type of person would find something a little more constructive to do with that money in another room.

I wish I had a pantry area. We have shelving that makes due. I’ve been trying to cut back on the amount of food that I purchase, it’s so easy to purchase items just on a whim. I have to create a food inventory list to keep track of the items that we have and meal plan around it as well.

I totally agree. It’s not easy to throw away food especially when you’re aware of how many people go hungry everyday. It’s a good thing that you cleaned out your pantry and checked everything as well. Now that it’s all organized, you can keep track of the food and not waste any new ones!

An organized pantry is always an amazing thing! We went to clear containers for most of our dried foods and it has been amazing! My kids are able to help themselves a lot easier to things which means a little more independence in them. It also makes getting a grocery list together really easy, I can quickly see what I need to buy. You did a great job with your pantry!

While I was going through one of my kitchen cabinets today searching for my daughter’s cotton candy machine, I came to the realization that I really need to organize my cabinets. You’ve given me some inspiration. Now, I just need to find the time.

This reminds me to clean up our pantry after we come home from vacation. It’s good to clean it up especially since you’re right about a lot of people going hungry, it would be a huge waste if all the food that we had were to just go bad.

I would give my left arm for a decent pantry area. I have incorporated the plastic storage to my regular shelves for snacks and love the clean and crisp look

Look I have a shared pantry and it needs a deep cleaning. I want to do some baby steps in cleaning it but the person who lives with me needs to help because its a LOT of items that need to be thrown away.

As someone who regularly blogs about organization I really appreciated this post! The main reason I organize my kitchen cabinets so often is because I want to avoid that same awful feeling of throwing out expired food. I did that ONCE and vowed to never let it happen again. Great job on your pantry Kita!

I feel like one of the easiest places to forget things is the pantry and the fridge. I was at an event once where they said that food waste is the WORST problem especially in the US. omg. I need to clean mine out too.

Thank you for sharing your process and where you found the containers. I still need to organize my pantry but I have hesitated because of the cost of what I want to do, and because I’ll be moving soon. Think I will buy containers and baskets a little at a time. I’m happy you are organized now so that you can make better use of your stored goods. I don’t like throwing away food either because so many people have a need. Blessings.

  • […] Having someone else do the grocery shopping saves me time that I can spend on my business, my kids, or on me. I get it that you don’t want folks picking out your meat and veggies but with publix you won’t get bad meat and if you hire someone personally you can tell them what you want specifically. One of the biggest tips I can give to keep track of all of your food is to have lists on your fridge. So I have 2 lists on my fridge one for dry goods and one for meats. Whatever we run out of I add to the dry good list and then I make the other list the list for my food items that I will cook for the week.  I also add to my walmart cart online as I go so that when it’s time to pick up things everything is there. You can also do that with insta. If I need bread and cheese I will just add it to my instacart shopping cart and then add more and add more until it’s time for me actually purchase that way I’m not forgetting anything. Also, when I am better organized with my grocery lists I don’t have to keep buying the same things over and over again and I can keep my pantry organized. […]
