How the kids are doing the first month of school

This post is sponsored by JCPenney however, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own

It’s official, everyone is back to school. I have a 7th grader and a 4th grader and it’s been a tough first month of school. My son failed Social Study on his progress report with a 69 and my daughter’s attitude is the beginning of the teenage stage. I struggle as a single parent trying to manage my 3 businesses and make sure I’m a mom on top of that. I do require my kids to help around the house and do chores in addition to their after-school activities. Here is how the kids are doing the first month of school

How the kids are doing the first month of school

I don’t wake my kids up they have an alarm set on their electronic devices. My daughter wakes up first because at 9 she is more responsible. Her alarm is set for 5:45 then my son is set 6:00 by the time my son’s alarm goes off she should be out of the bathroom and downstairs fixing lunch.

By the time my alarm goes off at 6:15 everyone should be out of bathrooms and moving. I stay in bed until about 6:30 which is the time I get up to do hair, make sure deodorant is on, teeth are brushed, and belts are on. We leave the house at 7:00. School starts at 7:40 and I am back home by the time school starts.

When I get back home I start my work and take a nap because that morning nap is the best sleep I get. (I work best at night and my sleep pattern is way off and I have given up trying to work on it) I don’t come alive until noon and then I am on the ground running. From picking the kids up to coming home to do HW, then cooking, then off to activities, then back home to do baths, and get ready for the 3rd shift of working at night.

What do you like about school so far this year?

I asked each of my kids some questions about school so far this year and here are their answers

What’s your favorite subject?

Dman: Lunch (not a subject)

Zaza: Art

What do you love about your new school year so far?

Dman: I have my first guy teacher which is weird because I’m not used to a man teacher. He is cool!

Zaza: The upcoming Aladdin Play

What do you hate about school so far this year?

Dman: 2 of my teachers especially the social studies teacher she has us writing Cornell notes like we are in college

Zaza: My new friends and my many boyfriends….who are just friends mom. Boy Friend…get it…lol (she is getting a side eye from me)

Do you like wearing uniforms?

Dman: I hate that we have to wear belts but I’m used to it now as long as my shoes are cool

Zaza: I can make my uniforms fashionable by wearing cool jewelry and styling my socks

So my kids are in uniform and they have been in uniform since they started school. I have searched a long time to find uniforms that don’t tear in the knee, looked washed out after a few washes, or that can last the entire school year without me having to buy more. JCPenney has me covered when it comes to uniforms. I got all of my kid’s uniforms from JCPenney this year. Shirts are easy but the pants were my huge problem because a few years ago I had to buy uniforms throughout the year because of that knee that seemed to come undone in the first 3 to 4 months of school. When looking for a uniform I look for durability, fading, and how they hold up.

JCPenney has lots of different styles of bottoms and tops for you to choose from. My favorite brand is Izod! My son who is as rough as they come still has brand new looking uniforms and it’s a month of school. (so happy about that)

I also bought their sweaters from JCPenney for the fall and socks. Make sure you all check out JCPenney for all of your uniform needs. Are your kids in uniform? How do you make your kids stand out in uniforms? If you have a middle schooler read my post on what you can expect when it comes to middle school.

Oh man, my son sets his alarm and sometimes he goes right back to sleep when it goes off. So I have to barge in his room like a lunatic asking why he’s not up. (He’s in high school.)

My daughter just started middle school and is liking it so far.

I always liked going to JC Penney for clothes!

My kids just went back last Weds, so today is only day 4. So far so good over here, but my oldest started high school this year so I am nervous about his workload.

My kids are all grown, but the grandkids like school. They’ve been in school over a month now. They go to a private school but they don’t wear uniforms. That’s kind of odd to me.

All of my children are all grown but the grandkids are doing great. First couple of week one of them was bored. They were doing review and he found it boring.

That cracked me up about the Cornell notes. I am a school consultant and that is one of the ways we tell teachers to employ as it is good for engagement. He’s right about that!

Our district has a uniform policy for kindergarten thru 8th grade. JCP is our back to school shopping spot for uniforms and more. I can always find something and best believe I’m not letting my JCP monthly rewards go to waste. That $10 coupon comes in handy.

I’m a big fan of uniforms for school. It levels the playing field and takes the guesswork out of what to wear. I love the Lunch as the favorite subject. My son would say the same.

Oh wow has it been a month of back to school already! That is crazy! I can imagine it really does take a while to settle back in and get used to the routein that only school really offers.

I’m with you, I am NOT a morning person. I sleep my best from 5 am to 10am – BUT those hours are not conducive to school schedules. I barely survive on 3 hours of sleep haha. School transitioning can be tough.

Wow, I’m so impressed by your morning routine! Kuddos for such independence and organization for what is absolute chaos in my household. 🙂 Both kids are looking very cute and ready for a good school year.

It’s amazing that you don’t wake your kids up. I have a7th and 6th grader but I don’t trust them to wake up on their own or with the help of an alarm during school days, we would be 3 days late if I ever tried that 🙂

I”m glad your kids are loving school! And is it weird that I love that they wear uniforms? I think uniforms would have been a game changer when I was in school. It would have taken the stress out of fighting with my Mom on what to wear in the mornings…HA!

I love that you give your kids responsibilities. There’s nothing worse than a shiftless adult, and I think teaching responsibility and accountability early is essential.

It sounds like all is going well with the first month of school. I’m not sure how I forgot that JC Penny sells uniforms. Love the quality of their clothing.

Haa…lunch and art! Sounds like my kids. We had a day off today for the Jewish holiday and neither child wants to go back.

I love that you asked them questions like an interview! First male teacher yay that’s something the schools need more of. Izod is a really good brand I remember them from a few years ago.

My kids are in uniforms too. I have found that it is worth spending an extra dollar or two on the pants to keep the knees intact!

    Your children crack me up.
Our son isn’t having an enjoyable school year so far. I’m not sure if public school will continue to be our education route. Private school may be a better fit.
I wonder if private school teachers have a better attitude and outlook.

I am already tired of school activities. My daughter is in competitive cheer and she has practice till 8 pm nightly, fundraisers, all of this money I am spending. It is neverending. Can she just be in college already.

It’s really crazy during the start of the school year because everyone’s adjusting. It gets better as the school year progresses! I think the clothes are adorable and perfect for school!

Great conversation and good questions for the kids. Mine are in their first full week, so I will save this for closer to the one month mark.

Girls are usually more responsible. I am waiting for the day when I don’t have to drag my daughter out of bed. She’s 7 and loves to sleep in.

My oldest is in 4th grade and my youngest just started Pre-K. It’s a struggle getting both of them out the best in the morning. Getting dressed, my oldest isn’t in uniforms and has a thing for graphic tees.

Sounds like they’re off to a great start. I laughed out loud literally at the many boyfriends and lunch being your son’s favorite subject! My daughter is now wearing uniforms, so I need to check JCPenney out because we’ve been having a hard time finding the perfect ones for her body

I’m certain my son would also say lunch is his favorite subject.

My kids are also in uniform, when my teen was young he was so rough on the knee of his pants. I did not understand it considering he spent most of his day sitting in a chair.
