A few weeks ago I got an email saying

Faces of Content tour Atlanta

Being invited to be the face of anything is nerve-racking. I’m an introvert and I am not used to people. First we had to wear white and I eat so messy and always waste something, then we were getting our pics taken. I know I’m a photographer but I hate being in front of the camera. Mainly because I don’t know how to pose in front of one and mainly because I am ashamed of my weight. When I got to the event I had my camera in my hand…it’s my hiding mechanism so that I can just take pics and check the room out before I settle in.

The first thing I noticed was that it was a room filled with much younger bloggers or as someone said, content creators. The second thing I noticed was that I didn’t know anyone. Now being a blogger here in Atlanta for almost 10 years has put me in the room with quite a few folks but this was the first time I was ever in the room where I didn’t know anyone. Not one single soul. My mind was screaming run but my body stayed put because at some point I have to stop letting fear keep me from being who I am meant to be.

I couldn’t leave anyway because Taylar wouldn’t let anyone leave without meeting 5 other people. Oh gawd…now I gotta strike up a conversation with 5 people that I don’t know. As I looked around the room to see who was an introvert like me someone came up to me and said hi I love your jacket where did you get it from. Perfect ice breaker! After that, I was able to talk to another person then another and by the time I knew it I was talking to about 8 people. I made my goal of more than 5.

Because I stood there and faced my fear I got 3 new clients, made a few connections via instagram, and I finally figured out how to be proud of myself. I don’t know why at that very moment I was proud of me when I should have been proud of me a long time ago but it was at that moment that I said you know what dammit Kita you are the SHAT!

So how do you face your fears while being one of the faces of content? (see what I did there lol)

Focus on your strengths. What are you good at? I know I am good at taking photos so I use that as a way to break the ice with myself. It helps me be at ease because that is what I am good at.

Know that your voice is unique and own that. No matter what anyone says, know who you are because if you change when the wind changes or when someone tells you to change you don’t really know who you are.

Stay in the room. No matter what. Give yourself a time limit if you must but stay in the room. For me, it’s 30 min max. If you don’t stay you may miss another opportunity for greatness.
