20 Things Fathers Do Best

I didn’t grow up with a father but I know that there are at least 20 things fathers do best. I want to share the story of growing up without my father but I haven’t found the right words. Since this blog is read by a lot of people I want to make sure my words don’t match my anger so I’ll save that story for another time. Just know that there is a difference when you grow up with a father vs when you don’t. I don’t know if it’s the same for boys as girls but when a girl grows up with a father they know what they want in a man, they don’t accept anything, they have higher standards. Not to say that those who grew up without one doesn’t have the same standards but it just feels different. I grew up going after boys at a young age not really knowing my worth. Getting married young and trying to find a man to fulfill what my father didn’t.

Today though I’m not going to dive into all that. I want to celebrate the good fathers out there that really take care of their kids. The ones who take care of their kids even if they aren’t with the mother of their children. I am not a father so I will never get into wishing myself a Happy Father’s Day. My kids had a great father who we will always celebrate on Father’s Day even though he is no longer here. Even if your father does 10 of these….or 5 or all 20 they are there and that is all that really matters.

20 Things Fathers Do Best

  1. Teach our daughters that we are loved and we don’t have to look for it… Love will come to us when its ready.
  2. Sleep.
  3. Cook on the grill.
  4. Watch sports.
  5. Teach children how to drive (my patience level can’t handle it).
  6. Get wrapped around their children’s finger especially their daughters.
  7. Will buy their daughters anything they want (see 6).
  8. Come find their kids mother when things get lost.
  9. Tell the kids to find mom in 90% of situations.
  10. Reason with kids when it comes to eating veggies.
  11. Show their sons how to be men with actions….not just words
  12. “Fix” everything even if mom can fix it herself.
  13. Plays video games more than the kids (Oh wait was that just my hubs?).
  14. Let the kids fall and get hurt. As moms we rush to the scene but dad says let them get a little scrape they will be alright.
  15. Great horses. My daughter loved to get on her dad’s back. I got on his back once… let’s just say he wasn’t right for a few months.
  16. Getting the bugs… any kind.
  17. Tough love.
  18. Math and Science projects + homework.
  19. Never follow the plan.
  20. Love…their love means the world. They are the calm sometimes that we as mothers and their kids need.

A list of 20 things fathers do best in celebration of father's day.

My hubs was a great guy. I always say he was a better father than a husband. He liked to spend time with both kids on a one on one basis which at first I thought was different but I loved how he took each one out for various things separately so that he can have that one on one time with them. He wanted his son to be better than him so he was a bit tougher on him but the girl…she had him wrapped around her fingers.  She knows better than to come to me with her dramatics I shut it down. I love the memories that will last a lifetime I captured with him and the kids.

If you have a father show him some love. If you have a man in your life that treats you like a princess…treat him right this Father’s Day.

The “teach children how to drive” hit home. My Dad did teach me how to drive. Now that I have a 15 year old son about to get his permit, I’m so nervous. I’m a better driver than my husband but I’m worried I won’t have patience. Deep breaths, right?!

Haha, yes – math homework is ALL my husband. He is an accountant, so he kind of understands it. If it’s not common core that is LOL.

These are all things that my husband does as a great father to our kids. My oldest daughter, just turned 19…my husband came into the picture, when she was 2. Her biological father never cared to do anything but send gifts. She joined the Navy recently, and when we went for graduation…she thanked him for being a father to her. It’s not the same thing, but he did show her all of these 20 things..except the driving..I did that, EEK! (lol)

This is a great list. My husband does a lot of this, but he also works a lot thanks to the military. So I step in a lot of time. I do have him do the math stuff 😉

Dad’s are truly great. I didn’t really know mine, but watching my husband as a father has been an incredible experience and it sounds like your husband was equally as wonderful as a father. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Teach them how to drive. I was just getting behind the wheel and he was like lets get on the freeway, I’m like are you crazy, I can barely drive the streets. Needless to say I drove the freeway and we didn’t crash. Daddy’s need a lot more recognition then what they receive.

I think the only one my Hubby may lack from this list is sports. He actually doesn’t watch any… so weird! LOL… he has mastered the art of being wrapped around my Girlies’ fingers and definitely knows how to play his fair share of video games.

I think its great that you have “sleep” as number one. My cousin in law said the only thing he wanted to do for Father’s Day was sleep but he knew it wasn’t going to happen because his wife and small daughter was going to make him do something. It’s funny how we always make plans and take over.
