Pros and Cons: AirBnB vs. A Hotel

AirBnB has quickly become a popular name in most households. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s a service that allows you to rent out a home, a room within a home, or just more options in general than a hotel. Hotels have always been a quick go-to but with the rise of technology, other options such as AirBnB are quickly becoming the new popular choice. Although popular there are pros and cons to both an AirBnB and a hotel.

Pros and Cons: AirBnB vs. A Hotel

Knowing What You Get

With hotels, it’s usually pretty clear what you get and it’s often the same basic options. Either way, you know what to expect because with hotels, there are basic facts that have become the norm and are pretty simple to follow. With Airbnb, it’s not always clear what you’re getting. You have to rely on the lister’s description which can often times be thorough but more times than not, you’re wondering what all is included. Always be careful to check what the details are if it doesn’t say.

Pros and Cons: AirBnB vs. A Hotel

Options

Although hotels are the great “know what to expect” option, they only offer so many options outside the basics of every hotel. With Airbnb, you get to choose from a plethora of all kinds of different places. Plus, they have a large house selection which truly doesn’t cost any different than nicer hotels. This means you can feel more at home without sharing a building with tons of random people.

Safety

With hotels, there’s a certain amount of safety and security. For example, you are pretty confident that you can sleep securely, walk through the lobby without being attacked, etc. With AirBnB, all the places you can choose from aren’t owned by some big company where safety is guaranteed. Many of these homes or rooms are owned and listed on AirBnB by private owners. There have been some reports of video recorders being left in houses for owners to gain inappropriate content from visitors. Of course, these people were removed immediately as sellers on AirBnB but, this is the sort of thing that can happen. Although it’s not become a common occurrence, it’s still a con in comparison to a hotel.

Easy to Book

Both AirBnB and hotels are pretty easy to book. The AirBnB website is user-friendly and makes it pretty clear where your place is located. This will allow you to choose the best spot possible. It’s helpful that they offer a visual view of where it’s at right there on the site so it’s not a guessing game by looking at a map. Most hotel sites are pretty clear but they don’t often offer a visual of location, just an address. This is still useful but not as useful as the visual AirBnB offers.

Overall, both AirBnB and hotels are a great option, it just depends on what you’re looking for in your travel. If you prefer a home or new experience to a hotel, then AirBnB is a great option. If you like security in knowing what you’re getting and what to stick with the usual, then staying with the hotel is your best choice.

Which option would you choose?

I’ve done both and I will do an AirBnB over a hotel if there are a lot of positive reviews for the host. Good reviews are a MUST.

We have done both here in the states and in europe. I much prefer an airbnb over an hotel. Has more of a homey feel and we can get groceries and save money eating there.

I’m so concerned about safety issues so I stick with hotels/resorts when I’m traveling. I feel weird staying in someone’s home that I don’t know.

I do both hotel and houses. I like the house because I get the space on myself and I can cook my own food and I like the hotels for the amenities they offer. I will go whichever way seems to work the best. I do worry about safety so I always check the neighborhood before I rent a place.

I have done both! It depends on prices. Normally we just do a hotel though because we like the free breakfasts. Plus it’s usually easier and cheaper.

I’ve tried both, and I prefer AriBnB. That being said, the place has to have excellent reviews. While I prefer the feel of a home, I like to make sure that what I think I’ll get is actually what I WILL get.

I’ve tried both. I have young children and prefer a hotel for family trips. Less things for them to get into. When I did go to an Air Bnb it was with additional family and it was great for us to stay together, save money and have extra space for our kids to play.l

I have done airBnB before, and of course hotels. We find with a large group that a airBNB is so much fun because we are together and can have game nights and cook together.

Yes, I agree on your points. I have tried both and booking depends on our certain needs. I normally read reviews before booking to have an idea about the hotel or the property.

I tried AirBnB for the first time in London. I prefer to stay at a hotel. I love the concept though. It’s just my personal preference.

We really like staying in AirBnBs. We like having a kitchen to use since we have food allergies.

I have never tried an AirBnB and it sounds good but the thing is I am always traveling with my kiddos so I prefer to book on a hotel for my kids safety.

I have never stayed in an AIrBnB I am so nervous. The prices are always amazing but I just cant bring myself to do it. It would have to be a place that had TONS of reviews and was close to a lot of attractions that stayed open or something lol.

You couldn’t have summed it up any better. There a pros and cons to choosing either one. I think I’m a little biased towards hotels but I’ve had a great experience at Airbnb too.

I have never tried an air b n b. So far the hotel perks like free breakfast, a pool, sometimes a happy hour, saving up points outweigh. However if we wete to do a long stay somewhere we may need an air bnb just to be able to have more comforts from home.

I have never stayed in an Air b n b. I like the perks of a hotel stay with breakfast in the morning, gym, and sometimes some cool things for the kids!

I like the security of a hotel. I like to know exactly what I’m getting up front so I can plan it out in my head. I have a hard time trusting an AirBnB’s. They remind me of a LifeTime movie that can go bad at any second.

I have a lot of family that have been using the AirBnB over the last few years. They have come to prefer it for the longer stays and hotels for the shorter ones.

Thank you for sharing the pros and cons. I used to love Airbnb. The variety of places, cost, etc, but when I travel with my hubby and want a real vacation including being spoiled, I prefer a hotel.

I like both for different reasons. I loved my first Air b n b when I went to Playa De Carmen and now I am forever friends with my Airbnb host because I stayed on her property for a month and we built a friendship from that bonding!

I haven’t braved an Air B&B yet mostly for reasons you stated but also…. sanitation. I kind of trust hotels to keep things clean but with a private rental….. I am just not sure. Kind of scared of bed bugs too honestly. What do you think about the sanitation issue? Am I just paranoid?

I still haven’t tried an Airbnb. I am so picky about people and germs that I don’t think I could do it. But then again, hotels ain’t that much better neither!

I’m more likely to stay at an AIRBNB if I’m traveling by myself. But if we’re traveling as a family it’s easier to have room service and amenities that everyone will like.

I’ve stayed at an AirBNB and honestly, I prefer staying in a hotel, I just feel more comfortable. I’ve had some good and bad experiences so I’d rather relax a bit and just book with a major hotel chain.
