How to choose the perfect wine if you don’t know anything about wine

If you’re clueless about wine or lack of knowledge about this subject, choosing the perfect wine can feel impossible. Don’t worry, I’ve been there and still kind of sit in that zone every time wine comes into play. In other words, you’re not alone, but you don’t have to walk into a wine situation blindly. Here are a few tips on how to choose the perfect wine.

How to choose the perfect wine

Do Some Wine Tastings

Wine tasting is everywhere and offered even in smaller cities. Who has the money to buy a bunch of different bottles of wine, then go through and try them out? No one – well, maybe a few, but not me! Wine tasting isn’t expensive and allows you to sample a few different types of wine to help you broaden your horizons.

It Never Hurts to Ask

If you have a friend who knows wine, ask them to teach you or help you learn. They may be able to help you narrow your likes and dislikes to make choosing the perfect wine much easier. If you don’t have a friend who knows wine, ask the bartender, the waiter/waitress, or the person selling it to give a suggestion. This sometimes can be a 50/50 toss up on getting a good suggestion, but at least you know 50% of the time you’ll get a great wine.

Google is Your Friend

When you find the wine that suits you, it feels like a match made in heaven. However, there are various types of wine and not just red, white, etc. It goes deeper than that. Plus, sometimes it’s not just about picking the perfect wine for you, but picking one perfect for the meal or occasion. When in doubt, Google it. Having a steak dinner with a friend and need a wine to match it? Type that sucker into Google and you’ll have plenty of suggestions pop up in half a second.

Base it Off Your Usual

What type of alcoholic drink do you usually order? Are you the martini type or the whisky type? If you like a strong drink, go for a darker wine. If you like your drinks lighter, maybe even sweeter, go for a lighter wine. Even if you choose a red wine, the lighter color of red will be a lighter flavor than the darker. When in doubt, think moscato for sweet and chardonnay for not so sweet.

Use a Wine App

There’s an app for this – no, really, there is. There are wine apps where people describe wines to a T and even post a picture of the exact brand and type of wine they’re discussing. So, if you’re clueless, you don’t have to be. Simply type or scan in the wine you’re looking at buying and see what others are saying about it.

With wine, you can fake it ‘til you make it. It’s not like you’re going for a title in wine selections, you’re just looking for your perfect wine match and some knowledge about how to pair it. Choosing the perfect wine doesn’t have to be a complicated science, it can be pretty basic and no one would really care or notice otherwise.

I’ll keep this in mind if I ever try wine again. I’ve tried a few and wasn’t impressed. So I mostly stick to sipping on my Diet Coke!

I love this. I know NOTHING about wine and to be honest, I usually buy it based on if the label is cute or not…yikes.

These are wonderful tips. I went to a wine tasting almost three years ago, and it was a wonderful experience, and I learned so much from it.

The hubs and I went to a wine tasting before and we definitely asked the guy a lot of questions and learned a lot from him. I have never thought of checking a wine app. Thanks for the tips!

This is terrific info because I haven’t developed a fancy wine palate. I know a few that I like, so if I can use an app to find similar ones that will save me a lot of frustration.

I am not much of a wine drinker, so these are useful to know about! I wouldn’t know the first thing about something like pairings.
