I don’t have a curated feed….and I don’t care anymore

Instagram…it’s where all of your photos live. All of the pieces of your life that you want folks to know about. I tried to have a curated feed a few months ago. I read all the articles on Instagram, paid for some classes, had someone take a look at my feed to help me and I still felt lost. Instagram is supposed to be fun and inspiring and here I am trying to be like everyone else instead of being myself.

Let’s Define a curated feed

The correct definition is choosing images that complement each other allows the eye to move freely through your feed without interruption. In other words…when all of your photos look similar in style, color, and mood.  For example, some people have colorful photos so every photo they put up has to be colorful. Some brands have a certain color in their branding so they have to put that color in their feed somehow. Some people use certain filters and use that same filter for every picture. Some people use the same objects in all of their feed.

Mixing my business and business life

One of the things I struggled with was not trying to mix my business life with my personal life. I don’t have much of a business life per say lol. I am a photographer and I have a blog. The blog is more personal but I do offer photography as a side hustle. I was told that I shouldn’t mix my photography in with my blog content/personal content. Great, I listened for about 3 months and then I got tired. You see  I was sending people over to the “photography” Instagram (@sweetgrassrootsco) and folks were like what is this, or folks would follow me on Sweetgrass but then turn around and tag me using itsreallykita, which most know me by. It was hard driving traffic over to the new Instagram. One of my clients was like I don’t know sweetgrass I know itsreallykita and that’s what I will tag you in lol. All of my clients came from It’s Really Kita and no one wanted to acknowledge me over to the new insta so I changed it. I was getting 10 likes on one photo from sweetgrass vs. 50 on itsreallykita. I was so torn and tried my best but it wasn’t working for me so you know what I did? I went back over to It’s Really Kita insta and said to hell with it. I still have sweetgrass but it will turn into another business. I also went back to my hashtag which is #shotbykita that way people can separate my business from the blog by using a special hashtag.

I don’t get a lot of likes or business from instagram so why should I care

Now I know most people who have that curated feed gets a lot of likes and a lot of opps but I simply don’t. I never get a lot of likes. I have had 400 likes (at the most) and 12 likes (as the least). I fluctuate between the two often and I have never once had an opportunity on Instagram so why am I sitting here trying to have the perfect feed. Number 1 a lot of folks have a lot of followers but don’t get a lot of engagement which means someone has been buying followers. Number 2 I don’t have time to have the perfect feed because my life isn’t perfect. You get whatever the hell I am going to put because guess what this is how I really live my life. I don’t knock curated feeds if you have help to put it together do it. If you have the time to have bright colors in all of your photos or use a certain filter and edit it for each and every picture…do it. If you get paid to look a certain way…do it. If you just like having a certain look…then just do it.

So what’s on my Insta feed?

You will get great photos. I can guarantee you that. You will also get some great captions. Here is what else you will get. Some flowers (because I love them), some kids (because I have them), some clients (because I get all of them from It’s Really Kita and by word of mouth + my clients know I act a fool why try to be something on another feed that I’m not), some half shots of me (I hardly ever show my full face so you will get me turning to the side or something of that nature) some food (because I can cook and I love to eat), and whatever else I feel like putting up that day. I also participate in the Project 365 Daily so you will always see a photo of the day.

Here are some things I do on my Instagram that works for me

  • I follow 10 people a day and I comment on 10 people a day. I do that daily no matter what
  • I use the VSCO app to edit my pics and 80% of my feed is from my Canon 5D
  • I go into hashtags and like 10 photos
  • I post no less than twice a day

That’s about it. I am not perfect and I am tired of trying to be that. Some people post curated feeds and then let you into their real life on instastories. If that works then do that also but I am tired of trying to put my all into a social media that I don’t own. I prefer to put my all into my website and things that I can control. I can’t control the algorithms and I can’t control what people see and don’t see. I can control my newsletter and my piece of the internet right here on this blog.

Do you have a curated feed? Does it matter to you if some people have it and some don’t?

Instagram is my most neglected social media. I usually post once a day and sometimes not even that often. I don’t have a curated feed and I’ll throw up pics of my grandkids in a New York Minute. I’ve been stuck at 7.5K followers forever it seems. I would love to hit the 10K mark so maybe I should do more. Sigh.

You have a lot of great tips here. I am just learning how to do everything in Instagram so this is definitely helpful for me. I can definitely say I don’t have a curated Instagram page either.

Nope. I just don’t post on the IG as much as I should. I try to but it’s just not my thing. I’ve yet to crack the 1k mark. I would probably put more effort into it if it were a stream of income for me…probably.

I can’t blame you for not caring anymore because instagram also changes their algorithm so often, it’s tiring to keep up. It’s good to just stick to what you’re doing and just enjoy the app instead of pressuring yourself.

Instagram is a real struggle and I’ve been doing my best to build my account up for the longest time. It’s good to have a feed like yours, we should really care less about it since the algorithms change so much it’s already tough to keep up.

I just never understand what is going on with Instagram. I basically just stick to one photo a day, I comment on other photos, and I follow random people. I’ve given up trying to figure it all out.

My Instagram is going through a lot of changes at the moment but I am loving how it is coming out. It definitely isn’t curated or have a theme, it’s a bit like me lol.

Honestly, I didn’t even know what it was. I am yet to create an IG presence for the blog. My son plans to help me with that one. Good points you’ve made her though.

I don’t have a curated feed but if others do it more power to them. It’s awesome that you do photography as well. I think our feed show really show who we are.

I can relate to you very much. Growing accounts in instagram is never easy and it’s really confusing sometimes as well. It’s hard work when it’s supposed to be something fun and enjoyable.

See, that’s why I appreciate what you write Kita. Your honest and tell it like it T-I-is. I get stuck when it comes to the whole curated thing. I try it, then I want to post something fun I did that just doesn’t go with anything. I end up doing whatever.

Like you, I have a personal feed and a biz/blog feed. Sometimes I think to myself, why did I do that?! Anyway my feed is not curated. I do follow some who do and some who dont. To each his own.

I’m more “real life” than curated feed. That takes too much time and I do’t have a lot of extra time to stage shots specifically for social media. Plus I would rather see someone’s reality than what they think people want to see.

Well my Instagram sucks if I have to do all this. Social Media should not be this difficult.

Keep your motivation up. You are going to do great things. It is very hard sometimes not to mix personal life with business life but you have to sometimes. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders and do not let the hassle of trying to get more business on Instagram bring you down.

I try to post daily and not let it define me or my day. It’s hard arduous to manage business and personal at the same time but it must be done.

I loved this!! I used to care a lot about how my Instagram looked, and now I don’t. It always felt so fake when I would work hard on what I was posting there, and what I was saying, and how I was hashtagging everything. Now I just post whatever, and to be honesty, I’m not focusing on those numbers anymore either. 🙂

I have multiple accounts, one is a curated feed, the other is just of my kids being kids. I like both and both are me!

I love the look of curated feeds but I definitely don’t think I have one. I think everyone should do what’s best for their brand.

Instagram has been hard for me to get into. Frankly, I’m private, and my kids are over me taking pictures of them for the world to see, because that are at the age of “people are just nosey and don’t really care about you.” Ever since Facebook bought the gram my like for it has diminished.

Girl, Instagram is a still a mystery to me. Like you, I try to post two posts or stories a day, but my life just isn’t that interesting to film or photograph all the time, so I’m still trying to figure that out. I absolutely love your “kita in the dark series” though. Very original!

Im glad you decided to ditch the asthetics.I think people are losing themselves forcing a brand “look” on Instagram but what if you took a really nice photo that didnt fit into your theme of work? What if your brand partnership doesnt neccesarily go with the theme. The themes seems limiting and to be honest forced and fake. Like if you just have an account for a theme then find, but most influencers who are blogging and mixing their personal life I think they should ditch the theme and be free too. Still be selective on what photos you use on your page.

I do not have a curated feed, nor do I plan to. I use my Instagram to post my travel photos, promote my blog, post my family, friends. I also have not changed it into a business account. Too much time to have separate accounts and keep up with other social media sites as well.

If I post once a day I’m happy lol I also gave up my curated feed after 4 years and I feel so much freer!! The way the algorithm works now they weren’t seeing them in order anyway.

I’m barely on IG. Someone will send me a video, I look at it then stay awhile and that’s when you’ll get an out of the blue like. It’s just an account I forget to look at. So you taught me something. I didn’t know there was a matchy matchy something called a curated feed. 🤷🏽‍♀️
