I started driving at 15 got my learners permit at that age and then drove by myself a year later. I was having a conversation with one of my friends and asked when her daughter would be getting her license she said her daughter wasn’t interested in driving since there was uber. I guess times have changed lol. This is the conversation I had with my mom when it was my first time to drive many years ago….
Scene: I was about 16 and we had company from out of town in the home that weekend. I had to go to school for a test and my mom did not want to leave the company in the house but I needed to go to school for a couple of hours. This was at the end of the school year and I think it was a finals.
Me: Mom can I please drive by myself please I have been driving since 15 I am ready I promise you I am.
Mom: No I am going to get someone to take you to school you ain’t driving my car.
Me: Come on mom it’s only for a couple of hours I promise I will drive slow as a snail and play the music really low
Mom: No
Me: Mom please, I promise I will be very careful
Mom: *sigh really loud* Go ahead and be careful you make one wrong turn or something happens you will not drive ever again.
I grab her keys and my tapes (yes I said tapes) and run out the door but I forgot my pocketbook so I came back in my mom did not hear me and I saw her with a tear in her eyes. She cleared them up quickly when she saw me and said
Mom: Why are you back, oh you must not want to drive give me my keys back I changed my mind
Me: Too late I just needed my pocketbook *grabs it and runs*
Conclusion: I have never ever seen my mom cry not even when her mom died. My mother was strong she never broke or at least I never saw her break. I think seeing me drive for the first time got to her. I was growing up. I will feel some type of way when my children drive for the first time….BTW I am not teaching them they have to go to drivers school I don’t have the patience.

March 21, 2018 at 11:51 amI did all the driving with all our kids. They had to fill out a sheet with so many hours they drove with their parents. I even made them drive in all kinds of weather. They are all good drivers to this day.

March 21, 2018 at 11:54 amMy oldest will be 14 this summer, so he is just 2 years away from driving. Here in Mass, kids can’t get their learners permit until they turn 16, but they can go on their birthday, so I know he will want to do that.

March 21, 2018 at 12:33 pmMy son is 16 and can legally drive, but he has autism so I’m not sure if he ever will. That’s fine by me!
My daughter, however, will drive when she gets old enough. And then I’ll worry.
I took a drivers course before I learned to drive, and I’m glad I did!

March 21, 2018 at 2:37 pmI can remember the days when I was just learning how to drive! I think it’s a wake up call for our parents that we’re one step closer to being adults. Thanks for all the links that you shared!

March 21, 2018 at 3:51 pmIs always scary to see your child behind the wheel of a car. You know what they’re like and what they have been like their entire lives. I know when my son gets to that point I will probably be crying myself. I’m not ready for him to be grown-up.

March 21, 2018 at 7:41 pmI remember when my oldest son started driving a few years ago. I cried a bit the day he got his license and drove away alone in my car for the first time.

March 21, 2018 at 10:20 pmMy dad taught me to drive. However, when it was time for me to get my driver’s license, he was a nervous wreck! I had to learn to do defensive driving. Living in the city means you have to learn how to stay safe and protect yourself from crazy drivers.

March 21, 2018 at 10:29 pmI went to driving school. I think I will teach my son the basics. However, he will most likely attend driving school as well.

March 21, 2018 at 10:59 pmI remember learning to drive. I thought it was the most exciting thing ever. Luckily, my kids are still young enough that I don’t have to worry about them getting behind the wheel soon.

March 22, 2018 at 12:51 amMy mom is the same why. I never see her cry, she has buried both of her parents and her baby sister. She is a thug, I’m convinced.
I’m in my feelings stage. My son is 13 and he isn’t driving but he is growing up. He has a girlfriend and is headed to High School.

March 22, 2018 at 1:54 amI went to driver’s school, bought my first car for 2 grand by saving money up and learned the hard way. There are a lot more distractions these days so I am really worried for my kids to start driving.

March 22, 2018 at 7:03 amI literally can’t imagine NOT learning to drive because there’s Uber. I would be telling that gal she would still be learning to drive since Uber isn’t always available.

March 22, 2018 at 2:06 pmI can only imagine what parents have to go through every time their children hits milestones especially a milestone as big as driving. It’s really going to make you realize that your child is becoming more and more independent.

March 22, 2018 at 2:23 pmMy daughter will be 19 in June, she wasn’t interested in driving either. Didn’t get her permit until she was 16, and didn’t want to drive any at that point either. Only after her friends started driving did she want to learn. She learned, and got her license when she was almost 18.

March 22, 2018 at 11:02 pmI can remember the first time my kids each started driving. I felt like they were inches away from completely not needing me anymore. It’s heartbreaking but you feel proud at the same time!
