It’s ok to get stock photos for your blog post

Yes I’m a photographer and I cringe every time I have to use a stock photo but I do what I have to do. Some of my photos are from stock sites and some are my own. I want to tell you which sites I use, when to use stock vs your own photos (affiliate posts do well when you use your own photo also when you are working with a brand use your own photos) I don’t use my own photos for all recipes but the recipes are mine. I use the picture for visual because trust me even if you follow the recipe it will still look like something you made not something that I made. So in this post I want to say it’s ok to use stock photos. I will list some of the sites I use and when to use stock photos for your own post or social media content.

When to use stock photos

Let’s talk about when to use stock photos. Anytime you are not working with a brand or when you are not trying to sell something. I use my own photos when I work with a brand and I try to use my own photos when promoting an affiliate that I love. When you see me using the brand then you are more likely going to buy that brand if you see a real-life picture of it. I also try my best to take pictures all the time so I can have various pictures to put up but if I don’t have one that fits the story then I will use a stock photo.

I will list some of my favorite sites but first, lets talk Unsplash. I have a love-hate relationship with them. I used a photo from them a few months ago and found out that the photo belonged to someone who didn’t give unsplash permission to use it. It was a mess and I had to take it down. I have heard of a few more people getting sued by unsplash because who knows who owns those photos and it’s not really verified. I still use unsplash but these days I try my best not to unless I am doing something on instastories that will go away the next day. On this blog, I stopped using unsplash altogether.

I now use these companies below

Deposit photos – This is a great site that has many different sizes. I know with WordPress well at least in my backend huge pictures won’t load so I love that this site gives you the options to size smaller. They always have a deal going on and I got in when their deal was low low low.

Adobe Photos – Yes you have to pay for these. I already pay for the entire Adobe suite might as well get the pictures monthly. I might do away with this though. I don’t use it a lot but I still like to have it as a backup.

Envato – As a former graphic person this is my site! I love that they have not just photos but graphics for video, music, PowerPoint stuff, illustrations, and so much more. This is the site to get if you love all things media. It’s a one-stop shop and well worth the yearly fee.

If you are looking for diversity the accounts above have them. I always find great African American photos from Envato and Adobe. If you want specific places to find diversity check out

Createherstock – I had a subscription to them but I saw the same photos everywhere so I wasn’t a fan of them. That was last year so maybe they have updated.

Nappy – This is a newish site and I like the variety on this one.

Overall I think if you get Envato you are good to go. Again make unsplash your last result and nothing beats a picture that you take yourself but just in case don’t ever feel bad that you can’t get a photo in for your blog post.

What are some of your favorite sites?

I do prefer my own, when possible. But I have TOTALLY used stock photos in a pinch. Sometimes, they’re much better than what I would be able to capture myself.

I think it’s okay to use stock photos sometimes. I do in some of my posts. Sometimes you just have to use them, and sometimes I think they look nicer too. It all depends on your post I’d say.

I use my own photos whenever I can, but I love stock images! Often if I’m writing something quickly and I don’t have time to take photos, I will grab stock images.

I love this! Not every post has to have a bunch of personal shots. If you’re very busy, and you’re post doesn’t require them, just do stock.

This 100%! I use stock images in posts where I don’t have my own images to use. Of course, I’d always rather use my own but we can’t have photos for every occasion.

I used to do all my own photos. I couldn’t keep up. Now I use stock photos from Canva and I love it.

This is very true! I do prefer to use my own photos though, but it depends on what I’m doing. My blog is a baking blog, so if I just need a picture of a cup of flour, there’s no harm in that. But I wouldn’t want to use a stock photo of blueberry muffins or something like that.

I pre-purchased stock photos and I access them from time to time. Mostly when it’s a photo I cannot take myself.

I sometimes use stock photos if I do not have the ability to take the exact photo I need. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic.

These are great tips! I love taking photos for myself, but sometimes I just can’t quite capture what I need—or I’m looking for something more generic. There are a few stock sites you listed that I’m not familiar with. So excited to check those out!
