During the holidays we visited Chattanooga, TN more on our trip later but let’s talk about a question I got from one of my friends. She asked me when I pick a hotel what am I looking for. Great question so let me give you the answer. This is my opinion so you may be looking for something different. This is what to look for in a hotel.
What to look for in a hotel
When I stay at a hotel I look for where the hotel is located. I need a centralized hotel that is near all the happenings of that city. Just in case I want to take a walk to activities or take an uber for the low low. I also like staying in the heart of the city where I stay. For our trip to Chattanooga, we decided to stay at the Westin. I normally stay at Hyatt but thought I would switch it up this time. I picked this hotel because of the location plus I liked the pretty windows. Now I didn’t realize that this hotel was right by the interstate like literally on the interstate but it was pretty cool and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The noise level was pretty good and we only heard a few sirens.
Next, I look for amenities. Does the hotel have a pool? An indoor pool is even better so that I can enjoy it on rainy days and maybe even in the winter. I also look for hotels that serve breakfast. The Westin served breakfast but it was extra and didn’t come with the room. Having a gym is a plus even though I never utilize the gym…hotel or not lol. I also love when hotels have a mini Walgreens type of store. I always forget something and I don’t feel like finding the nearest Walmart to purchase one small item. I love it when a hotel has a store that has things like toothbrushes, pain meds, and water. Although I bring my snacks and stuff with me sometimes you can’t avoid paying for something you need.
A well-designed room is another plus for me. Since I have two kids we need to be able to spread out. In other words I need a spot where I can hide from the kids while in the room. I also sometimes have to separate them from fighting so I need a semi-big room with lots of space. The bathroom needs to be nice also it’s key because that is usually where I hide when close quarters become too much.
A friendly staff or how they speak to me is something I value. At the Westin everyone was nice. My son lost his phone and they found it for me. I also called for towels and they had it to me within 5 min.
Those are some of the things I look for in a hotel. Here are a few more things you should look for when picking a hotel
- A swivel chair (my son asked me to put this and I was like glad Westin didn’t have this because I’m sick of them swiveling)
- Safety measures. How is safety? What are others saying about their stay? With all this sex trafficking going on I need to make sure we are safe
- Parking. I normally valet park because I’m lazy but a part of safety is making sure your car is secure at whatever hotel you’re at.
- A functional workplace. I need a desk because I work and my job has to go with me sometimes. I also love a computer that doesn’t take me years to login to wifi. Having an extra computer for guests is great also because I forgot my computer once and needed to send an email and didn’t want to do it on my phone.
- Instagram spots for photos. Ok this isn’t a must-have but it’s nice to have. This hotel had a beautiful fireplace and the decor was gorgeous. We also loved the stairs in the middle!
- The ability to pick where you want your room. I like to be in the middle not on the 1st floor but not on the top floor either. If the hotel has 6 floors I like to be on the 3rd. I like the option of saying I want to be on such and such floor with a certain view. I was able to do that with the Westin.
When picking a hotel what do you look for? What’s your favorite hotel to stay at?

January 2, 2020 at 7:24 pmWhen I am away I am paying so i want everything I have at home and more hopefully. Gym for me pool for the kids always is nice. Breakfast and coffee makes the stay a real plus. Staying in the heart of the city will make shopping and site seeing easier.

January 2, 2020 at 8:52 pmThese are some of the same things I look for when we book a hotel. I do love staying at a hotel that has a pool for downtime with the kids.

January 2, 2020 at 9:33 pmI look for a lot of these too. Comfort is a big one, and polite staff. I once stayed in a hotel where everyone seemed to dang cranky. I’ve never been back.

January 3, 2020 at 2:00 amI look for most of these as well. We just actually got back from a business trip and stayed in a hotel. The pool and breakfast is a great bonus for sure.

January 3, 2020 at 4:42 amI love your list. It has been a long time since I have traveled anywhere. When booking a hotel, I usually go for a certain price range but I have noticed more hotels are offering some type of “snack dinner”. If I can find that option, I tend to book there to help keep the food costs at bay. Also, if I am going to be somewhere a few days, having a small kitchen or at least a microwave, fridge or freezer is helpful because you can go to the grocery store for food.

January 3, 2020 at 3:12 pmI look for those things as well. And I also consider hotels that serve free breakfast.

January 3, 2020 at 4:55 pmThings I look for, if I’m not renting a car, are airport shuttle service and proximity to transit. I also like it when breakfast is included – my daughter gives bonus points if there’s a waffle station.

January 3, 2020 at 5:06 pmI look for many of these myself too. One thing that I’m always looking for is the free breakfast, and usually one with a pool. My kids love having a pool.

January 6, 2020 at 2:08 pmSince it’s typically just the three of us, we need a one-bedroom suite. Our son typically sleeps on the pullout sofa while we have the bedroom to ourselves. I’m with you on the indoor pool. Our son loves to swim year-round. The last hotel visit was to an Embassy Suites and I am a fan! I want to stay at their hotels exclusively because they also have a kid-friendly happy hour each night. It’s a great way to wind down before dinner.
