Confessions of a blogger

Y’all are loving my confessions. I have done confessions of a widow and confessions of a single mom now it’s time to get to the blogging world confession. Some folks gonna hate me for this one….oh well. You haven’t lived until you’ve been hated on let’s get to it. I will give you 3 confessions and then tell you why I love blogging and why I won’t be quitting anytime soon. These are the confessions of a blogger

Confessions of a blogger

I don’t make a lot of money

I have been blogging for over 5 years and I have never seen more than 15k as in $15,000. While some bloggers boast about making 6 figures I haven’t. Blogging isn’t my main source of income if it was I would be homeless. Don’t think that you can wake up tomorrow and say…oh I want to be a blogger so I can get paid to work from home and go on fabulous trips. Chile, please!  If you have a working husband or live with your parents then you will be ok but trust me it will take you a couple of years to make some real money. I didn’t get my first thousand dollar check until 4 years into the game. Most trips don’t pay you the trip is the payment so you won’t get any money so let me kill your dreams right there. Do not buy the self-help books, the courses that will guarantee you make money the first year etc. Don’t buy it! Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

The blogging world is just like high school

You have your popular kids, the nerds, the folk’s people don’t like, and the ones trying to fit in where they can. I am definitely not one of the popular kids I am just here lol. Literally, I am the kid that knows a lot of folks but I don’t belong to any clicks. There will be stuff spread about you that may or may not be lies, folks will come for you, and you may even get into a few verbal spats. Just think of it like this….it’s high school but the adult level high school.

Confessions of a blogger

Don’t be jealous of other bloggers you never know who they know

Ever heard the saying it’s not what you know it’s who you know. Well in the blogging world I would suggest you network. Networking and getting on PR lists is how most bloggers get the big opportunities. If you see sally sue get a huge opp and you have more followers than she does just remember you don’t know who sally sue knows. I admit I use to get mad at a blogger a few years ago who use to get huge opps…she didn’t have hardly any followers, her blog was boring, and I wondered how in the hell did she get all these campaigns. Come to find out her cousin or something was a big PR girl in the media and gave her the connects. After I found that out I had to get real with myself and say you know what it’s time to just blog for Kita and ignore everything else

I have more confessions but I will save that maybe put some up on Facebook. I honestly think I don’t get a lot of campaigns because I cuss a lot and companies don’t want to take a chance on that although I don’t cuss in any posts that I am paid for they still don’t want to work with me. Another reason…I don’t show enough of me. Brands want to see the face behind the blog and I am not willing to showcase me in that way so oh well. Look I am who I am and I am not changing for any brand. If they like me they like me if they don’t oh well. I have an audience and they are just missing out on my audience let them go to someone else who bought their followers.

Will I quit blogging? No…I got into blogging to have a voice that is mine and mine alone. While social media is a great extension, my blog is what people find on google and what people search for when it comes to certain things. I also love having an online diary to come back to so that I can read about my growth and help someone who may be going through something similar. If I can touch one person with a post, make someone laugh with a post, or teach a thing or two then I have accomplished something with this blog. Remember not everyone is on social media!

So getting back to networking. I went to a meetup of bloggers a couple of weeks ago. It was hosted by Erin of Live Pretty on a Penny.

Because I’m an introvert I truly didn’t want to go (another reason campaigns don’t work with me lol) but I made myself get out of the house. I only knew 3 of the bloggers but met so many more. We went to Bartaco and had a blast. I was there for the company but left with some new blogger buddies and that’s good. See some of our photos below. Do you go to blog meetups? Any confessions of a blogger you want to share?

I hear ya! It can be like high school, and I have little patience for that.

I also don’t make a huge amount. I make enough to pay some bills, but not all of them. That is my goal though!

Wow, the part about using vulgar language I can relate to. I’ve been thinking about that the past few days whether or not I should edit my last few posts because I do use cursing and I thought I was not on the ridiculous level I would definitely clean it up on a sponsored or guest post.

Awesome insight article Kita. I’m new to the blogging world as in starting a blog for the 1st time. I’ve been reading your blog and others for a long time now so thank you for writing this post and being honest about some of the things that are going on in that world.

I like that you are who you are and you definitely shouldn’t change for anyone. This is why I continue to read because I don’t want fake content. I don’t care about belonging to any group, I wasn’t popular in high school so I don’t give a dam about it now. I want to write because I want to become a better writer and eventually get a job as a website designer or developer and a blog will showcase my skills.

Keep writing and I will keep reading!

Girl- no lies were told. You hit the nail on the head with this one. I always hated It when bloggers suggest starting a blog of you are looking for a flexible part time job. Like you said, you can make money blogging but it can take years!

And it’s definitely like high school. I dont fit it in with anyone and that’s ok. Most bloggers don’t even know who I am. I trust my voice and that’s all that matters. Others will trust my voice too.

Love this post. I’ve been blogging for almost 3 years and I’m in the process of revamping my page in the near future. I’ve been following you since your recent Mommy Confessions with That Chick Angel. I enjoy your blog & Kita in the Dark on IG. Love hearing the thoughts of a seasoned blogger.

I loved this post. I just recently went on my first day with other bloggers. All so much younger than myself. But it turned out to be a wonderful day and enjoyed meeting others in the same field as myself.

I don’t know a lot of other bloggers in real life. I do want to attend more networking events though. Maybe next year I’ll make time to do so.

I’m so oblivious. Guess that proves I’m not one of the popular bloggers! That’s ok, I am fine with where I am. I haven’t heard anyone hating on me but if I would, I’d block them.

I will tell you that blogging full time can make good money. Thanks to the the opportunities I’ve had through blogging, I’ve been able to support my family of 5 since April, when my husband unexpectedly lost his job.

So much truth here Kita. But I think my favorite point is that you now just blog for yourself. I’ve tried many courses, workshops, conferences and always come right back to that truth.

I try to stay away from blogger spats – there’s no time in my life to waste on online arguments with people I don’t know. I also don’t make much money from my blog but it does pay the monthly bills which means I get to save on that… so it’s worth it. 🙂 Overall I quite enjoy blogging!

Thank you for being honest. I have been really wondering how people have been making money off blogging. I don’t know alot of bloggers either. I did meet a blogger in New Orleans who had way more followers than me. She was nice and we talked and took pictures. I have to do better at meetups.

You are so right the blogging world is full of cliques! Keeping it real ‘m a broke introvert that lives in a state that has meet-ups in expensive restaurants.. and finding another person of color blogging is like finding a needle in a haystack. I don’t know anyone in my city, but know bloggers everywhere else thanks to social media. Anyway I’m almost 2 years in and will I continue blogging. I have to express my feelings and be heard by others. Hopefully networking will come at some point.

Those are all honest confessions. I love to travel but no one pays me to take the trips I go on. Most of the trips I’m on are me and journalists who are getting paid by magazines to write about the destination.

I’ve been to one meet up about 3 years ago. It was fun, and exciting to meet other’s who do blog in my area. We still stay in touch to this day. I also have to agree with you on the ‘high school’ part.

I LOVE this post. I’ve also found over time, those bragging the most about their income aren’t being truthful. Some are – but most don’t make near what they claim. Each headline you posted I was nodding my head and wanted to clap! Thank you!

I couldn’t agree more on your points! I didn’t earn a lot of money. Sometimes there are opportunities, sometimes none. It’s like I am just enjoying it and doing my passion of sharing my thoughts and ramblings.

Absolutely love this post! Don’t trust anything we see online, especially those who offer to teach people to make 6 figures income. If they do make that much amount of money, they won’t have time selling and putting ads, asking people to purchase their courses.

People who also boast of their huge income also don’t discuss the years of unpaid work they did to build up their blog business.

This is all so true. The high school nonsense is beyond frustrating at times. Most of us are in this for our families and I wish we’d support each other more often.

The blogging world is like high school. Beauty Blogging, which is where I first started was CRAZY! You’re right, don’t compare yourself to others because you don’t know how they got there. I think that one should just focus on themselves, find their tribe and stick with them.

I’ve been to 1 blogger meet up, it was cool but much didn’t come from it! I’ve only been at it 2 years and my confession is it’s not always fun! I love writing but I hate editing pics etc. I wish those they are doing really well would be mentors for the newbies

Yes, blogging can totally be like high school. Also, it’s definitely more about who you know when it comes to getting blog opps. When I first started blogging, I wasn’t getting a thing, but then I joined this local blogging group of bloggers that were more well known. They invited me to a few brand outings as their plus one and then I started seeing PR opps coming into my inbox.

Also, speaking of sponsored opps. They look more fun from the outside in than they are sometimes. Some brands can be a little too hands-on and stifle your creativity when working on a campaign. I’ve brands leave a bad taste in my mouth. Like if you didn’t want me to present/share your product or service in my unique voice, why did you reach out to me?
