Private school vs public school: Which one is right for you?

This is a touchy subject because some people will always have their own opinions and I for one don’t knock anyone for what they do with their child. This post is about my children and what I want for them so let’s start with the big ole debate. Let’s talk about the public school or private school debate.

Public school or Private school Debate

I grew up in private school and then transitioned to public school so half of my schooling was done in private the other half in public. I can’t speak for anyone else but when I went to public school for the first time in 7th grade I was shocked at how far behind the kids seemed to be. Things they were working on I had done almost 2 years prior. My mom only had a high school diploma and she felt that the way to get rich was through education. She knew that it was too late for her so she drilled into me the importance of school. I felt that private school gave me my book smarts and the public school gave me my street smarts.

Now that I’m a parent I get into debates a lot with other parents. Why would you pay for private school when you can just move to a county with a good school? Or I went to public school and I’m smart and have a good top paying job. Or Private school isn’t what it’s cracked up to be it’s just for rich people who think they are all that. I have heard it all. I have even had some folks try to be in my finances and say well Kita you are a single mom there is no way you can afford private school. But did I ask you?

I prefer private school for my kids

There are a few counties in GA that have great schools but the housing in those counties are the most expensive ones you will find in the state of GA. Sure I can buy a 300,000 house in Alpharetta and pay over 2500 a month for a mortgage. I can also buy a cheaper house in the country and pay the same amount and go to private school. Same amount of money if you ask me. Most rich folks send their kids to private school so they have big houses and still send their kids to private schools even in the “good districts”. I live in a horrible school district but my mortgage is under 1000 bucks.  My same house closer to the city would run me about 1900 a month. I can take that 900 and put my kids in the best. I know some people don’t like my way of thinking but it’s my way of thinking. Private schools offer more options than public schools such as tennis, ballet, swim, film production, computer science, etc. Maybe your public school offers that but mine doesn’t. I feel strongly that private schools run how they want to run and they don’t have to follow the state rules so to speak. I also think when a child goes to private schools the doors to college seem to open up a bit faster and a bit cheaper for them.

What kind of school are my kids in now?

So right now my kids are in a charter/theme school. It’s the best school in the county but I feel they don’t offer a lot and I want more these days. More focus on computer classes because that’s the way the world is going, more focus on the arts because my daughter loves her crafts, more focus on what’s going on in the real world and not just the books. Everyone and their mama want their kids to go to the Ron Clark Academy because it’s fun, it’s driven, it’s more….more of what I want for my kids.

I have gotten into debates with a lot of folks this past couple of weeks and I admit it’s my fault because I’m asking folks their opinions on what to do with my child. I have to make sure that I do what I feel is best and not worry about what others think. So what does that mean? That means that I am opening up my options as my kids get older. My son will be done with his school after the 8th grade and he will not be going to the high school that I am zoned for. That school has the lowest graduation rates there is and my son will not get lost in the shuffle. So we will be looking at private school options these next 2 years.

So now the question I have for you. Would you do private school or public school? Would you do neither and just homeschool? If you have a child going into middle school make sure you read my tips on how to transition into middle school.

So I’m team public school. My kids have only been in public school and I plan to keep them there. Our public schools are great when it comes to education. The resources and programs the kids here have in public school beats anything the private school offers. Our public school students learn so much more than the private school students and I’m in a small town. Our public school kids are able to graduate college before high school (it has been done) and get high paying jobs after graduation because they have the necessary trainings before graduating. I do understand putting kids in private school especially if the school is better. Some people are just under the impression that private is better and that’s not always the case. Now if our public schools weren’t as good I would be searching for private schools as well. The education is what matters and as parents we should want the best for our kids. So do you and make decisions that are best for your family.

I love this read. My stance is that I’ll send my kids to the best school I can. If it’s public, great. If I have to pay, that’s fine, too. It’s up to us to give our kids the best possible start in life. Great post.

I sent my kids to private school, actually, it was a Christian school. All of my grandkids are in public school though. I think it sometimes depends on the kids and what their needs are when it comes to schools.

I’m not yet a mother in a place to make a decision like this, but I think this post was great to see some of the options when making such an important decision for your children!! Good stuff!

My husband is the product of a private school, where I am the product of New York City Public schools. We both wound up attending great universities and have good careers. I think it depends on the parent and the child and what type of environment the child will thrive in.

This is a long-standing debate between parents. I’ll also throw in Charter schools. They’re a good alternative for those that aren’t in a good public school district and cannot afford private school.

I’m the opposite! I started out in a public school through 8th grade and then finished in a private school. I homeschool my kids. 🙂

My daughter went to private school for the first couple of years. She’s now in public school since we’re in a great school district and she’s thriving. I think there are a lot of factors when deciding what’s right for your child.

I grew up going to private school, and went to public school for a whopping 6 months in the 11th grade. My kids homeschool. I definitely see the benefits of weighing the cost of living with choosing the right education for the kids. Where we live it would cost 90k to put our three in the best private school… the public schools near us are TERRIBLE.

My kids go to public school because I can’t afford private school. Thankfully, we are in a good school district. We are planning on moving my youngest to public online school once he hits 3rd grade. It will fit the lifestyle that we are aiming for and give us a bit more flexibility especially since my health problems continue to get worse.

Homeschooling is a solid no for me, that is not my style or my ministry. My son did Elem. School in the public school system and we had a great experience. For Middle School (7+8) he was in a private Christian School and our experience was great. For High School, he is going back to Public School and I’m sure he will be just fine. I don’t want him/nor does he want to be sheltered. I appreciate him wanting that experience before going to College.

My first grader is also in public school.

I think it boils down to what is best for you, your child, and your finances. Glad the conversation is still happening.

I’m not a mom yet but I know I would love my kids to go to a private school. Growing up I had an experience of both public and private school and I sure prefferd my private school experience so I would want the same for my kids.

You laid out some great information for this debate! I feel like if I were to get married and raise kids here in DC, I’d want them in private school, because DC public schools aren’t known for having next level academics. But if say, I were back raising kids in my hometown of Raleigh, NC, that has magnet schools, I’d be open to public schools.

I think this question depends on so many different factors such as finances, area, grad rate, afterschool activities etc. I went to public school but that was over 10 years ago. So I would need to check into whats best for our kids at the time.

I’ve only ever known the experience of a public school. This is a great blog post pointing out the differences between both. Thanks for sharing.

My son goes to a public magnet school for language. Our zoned schools are good, but we wanted the language immersion so we drive him across town every day. We considered our church’s private school. It is a great school and has received a lot of awards, but it is not diverse at all. For me, diversity is very important so that school will never be an option.

I dont have children yet but I definitely do not want my children to go to a public school. Its great your kids are at a theme/charter school but I think its nice you are thinking about their future and options to attend private school next.
