Two weeks ago I attended Aladdin the Broadway musical with my daughter and her class. It was a great play and her first Broadway play. I am so grateful that I was able to take her because so many parents had to work and couldn’t attend. I am also grateful I got to see Aladdin live because well……I have never seen the movie Aladdin. I know don’t judge me. I have never seen Aladdin in it’s entirety just bits and pieces so the play was a treat to see because I can now say I saw Aladdin. So let’s talk about why a live play is great for kids and I will tell you what I loved about the play and what I didn’t like.
Why a live play is great for kids
First, a live play is great for kids because it gives them a different experience beyond a regular movie. A regular movie is nice but a play you get to dress up and see the characters come to life beyond the movie screen.
Second, you get the wow factor with a few more current issues. Most movies stick to a certain script with a play you don’t know what you will get and a lot of plays act out what’s currently going on in real time. For example, a new dance move that just came out may be in the play, a new word, or a new movie.
Third, they get to join in as the audience. Sometimes during the plays, the actors may ask an audience to come up or answer a question right then and there and you get to be a part of the play right from the audience instead of just watching it.
Fourth, You get intermission to use the potty. If you have kids you know that this break is essential so you don’t miss anything. They will not stop a movie just because your little one has to go to the bathroom. At least with a play, you can coordinate the bathroom breaks a little better and not miss a thing.
Fifth, the oohs and ahhhhs are real. You see in a movie the sets don’t come alive but in a musical play…you see flying carpets, shiny things, and more flips and dances than you could ever imagine.
The experience overall is great for kids. Not the little ones but maybe 3rd grade and beyond. If you ever get the chance to see a live musical play take that chance and take your kids!
So now let’s get into the play…..
My daughter school took them to the play because they will actually be doing the play at the school next year. Their school puts on a live play every year. Last year it was Alice and Wonderland this year it’s Aladdin. You have to audition to be in the play. My daughter is a set builder so she will be one of the kids who helps build the set. Unfortunately, she could not be in the play due to my schedule and I have heard that they practice a lot for these plays so she was disappointed that she could not take on a bigger role but I think to go to the play at the Fox Theater made up for that. We started off the field trip at the Varsity here in Atlanta. Now I had never been and I won’t be going again (we will save that for another post).
I hated my seats for the play but again I didn’t purchase the tickets the school did. We were waaaaayyyy in the back. I couldn’t see anything and hated that aspect of it the most but the good thing about that is that when it was time to go…we didn’t have to fight the crowd. Always find the good in not so good situations.
The play itself I would give an 8 out of 10 because the star of the play wasn’t Aladdin it was the Genie. I think they should have named the play Genie featuring Aladdin lol. Now I don’t know if the Genie is the star of the movie because I have never seen the entire movie but in the play…you knew who the star was.
He was funny, entertaining, and kept you on the edges of your seat the entire time with his funny theactrics.
The play though as a whole was pretty good. The flying carpet was great to see they even had the stars in the background that was very cool.
Here are some extra tips
- You can’t use your phone at all they have security within reach. A few people got chewed out about the phone during the play so make sure you don’t use yours even if you get a call
- Get your tickets closer up. Pay for the good seats so that you can at least see everything. Our tickets were only 30 bucks so you get what you pay for but if you are going to a Broadway musical pay for the better seats
- Don’t try to get popcorn during intermission the line is way too long and they won’t let you in and out of your seat (This is only for the Fox Theater in Atlanta)
Disney movies can teach you so much! So what is your favorite Disney Movie? Which one would you want to see live on Broadway?

September 28, 2018 at 12:16 pmGoing to watch a live play is so much more exciting over a movie any day of the week. Helps children see what really happens and all the hard work and people it takes to put on a live play.

September 28, 2018 at 6:08 pmAs an adult I would love to do all the plays lol. Sometimes I wish my son was older so we can go to plays and events like this. I can’t believe you haven’t seen all of Aladdin lol. My husband and I almost went to see it when we were in NYC. This is definitely a good idea for older kids.

September 28, 2018 at 10:45 pmLove this! Going to plays is one of my favorite pastimes. My favorite musical that I’ve ever seen is Wicked. It’s the untold story from the Wicked Witch’s perspective of the Wizard of Oz. I’ve seen it twice and it’s by far my favorite. My kids are little but we took my son to a live version of Peter Rabbit a couple years ago and he loved it. There is such a different energy with seeing a live performance vs a film.

September 28, 2018 at 11:15 pmMy kids do not enjoy live plays but I love them. I have always wondered if it is because they are gamer boys. I have actually been to plays alone because I can’t get the men in my family to go.

September 29, 2018 at 5:26 amI personally love live plays! Just this past summer, while on a summer vacation trip to Myrtle Beach, SC with our kids (13 and 11 years old) to a live musical play, they loved it! Glad your daughter had a great time at the Aladdin live play!

September 29, 2018 at 7:56 amWhen I was a kid, my parents used to bring me and my sister to stage plays and its one of our bonding moments. In the future I would love to do the same when I have my own kids too. Great way to bond and expose kids at the same time.

September 29, 2018 at 12:53 pmA live play always has that something special which movies do not have. They give you that three-dimensional experience which is unique. Still remember the first play that I saw with my parents as a kid, and I was awe-struck.

September 30, 2018 at 7:33 pmDon’t feel bad Kita, I’ve never seen Alladin either, and probably won’t in the future. But I do agree that seeing live plays is good for young people. It gives them culture and rounds them out.

October 1, 2018 at 1:13 pmI agree. I remember traveling to NY to see a Broadway show in high school. Everything about the show’s production memorized me. I definitely look for opportunities to take my own to see live theater when I can.
