How I updated my kids bedroom for under 300

I’m not a decorator. I thought I would start off with that. I watch HGTV all the time as if I can do this and I end up just buying pretty things and not having a place for it. This summer my goal was to finish my kid’s rooms and have it done with all the key pieces such as wall decor, curtains, matching bedsheets, etc. I finished my daughter’s room (my son’s room is done also I will show you all that when it’s cleaned he doesn’t clean that well) I want to break down how I was able to decorate for under $300. The decorative items do not include her furniture and I will break down her furniture below first and then get into what I spent. How are you updating your kids room on a budget?

Updating your kids room on a budget

I bought her bed from American Signature Furniture. Here is the link for the bed! I have bought furniture from Rooms to Go and their furniture doesn’t last long at all. Yes I paid a grip for her bed but so far it has held up well. The bottom of the bed is an extra spot for a mattress but we use that as her toy box for now.

Her tv stand that has now become a window seat was bought from pottery barn. I got that on sale and I don’t even see it on the website anymore.

Ok, let’s get into the decoration and prices.

Her wallflowers were from Hobby Lobby. They were on sale (she paid for them herself and put them on the wall) $15 bucks. The big ones were half price and the little ones came in a pack.

The cubicle thingy is from Target on sale for 50 bucks (49.99 but I rounded it up) I was going to buy a dresser but those were too expensive so I opted for this instead. I just needed a place for more clothes and I can always buy the inserts to add clothes and stuff which comes in handy during the winter.

She spray painted her initials herself. The paint and the initials were probably 20 bucks from Micheals.

Her pillows I bought all of them from etsy. I love pillows for the decor and not to sleep on lol. I am weird I know. I think I may have paid a cool $30 bucks for all of her pillows and I bought the inserts from Ikea for dirt cheap

Updating your kids room on a budget

Overall I stayed under $300 for everything. Here are some tips:

  • Etsy is the cheapest and best place to get decorative items. I love spending my money with smaller shops that’s how I give back to the small business community
  • Furniture I use to get cheap but now I spend money on furniture because I have no plans on buying furniture every 3 to 4 years. Her bed will last her until she graduates high school
  •  Take your time and buy from various places. Wait for sale items or even discontinued items
  • Get your kids involved. I let my daughter pick the colors she wanted for her room and what pieces she wanted to decorate with. I had to reason with her for some things but for the most part, she did well on her own
  • Repurpose and recycle. The tv stand now doubles as storage and as a window seat. I redid the knobs to match the room
  • Create zones in their rooms. I have a spot that houses all of her play clothes so they don’t get mixed up with her regular clothes. She can also have a spot to just read and a place she can hide out to

I can’t decorate at all. I even have a post for tips on how to decorate when you can’t decorate make sure you all go and read that. A lot of my ideas came from Pinterest and just me winging it. When was the last time you decorated your kids room? If there is anything in the room you have questions about please feel free to ask below in the comment section. I will try to gather up the shops I used for any specific paintings.

I see the cubes being used in kids bedrooms all the time. Really like the love seat. New bedding and curtains always make a huge change.

I love this room! We need to re-do my daughter’s room. She’s crossing over into that older girl area, so there’s lots to get rid of. I’ll keep your tips in mind.

We moved into a new house and I still haven’t decorated. When they go back to school and I’m alone, I think I’ll try. Hopefully, it looks good when I’m finished. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Cute room, the bed reminding me of mines as a child. Those extra drawers at the bottom are much needed. I love how you involved her in decorating her room vs. telling her what you were purchasing.
