I’ve been blogging for over 10 years now. Can’t believe I’ve been in this space for that long. I got into blogging to have a voice. To speak my mind and help others not make the same mistakes that I’ve made. Basically, I’m here to help you save time and money with a sense of humor. In reality, blogging has gone down it’s not the same. It’s a money making machine and that’s ok bloggers do a lot of work to get the word out about other brands and products. We are the writer, the photographer, the money girl, the researcher, we are everything. I asked last week on my instastories if folks still read blogs and the answer was 75% don’t read blogs but here is the kicker…folks are still blogging and heavily. I see it in my Feedly weekly. People are still blogging and writing on their blogs even though they are on Instagram. Someone said in my messages that they didn’t feel the need to start a blog if you aren’t going to make money and that I should probably quit if I’m not making any. That got me thinking what if some of you all are on the fence about starting a blog because people say no need to start one if you aren’t going to make money. Lies and don’t let people stop you from doing something you may truly love. Here are my 5 reasons to start a blog that doesn’t involve money.
Reasons to start a blog that doesn’t involve money
It’s an online diary. I know many of us have had diaries in the past. I know I did and most of the things in my diary I realize are the same things others are going through. Why not create a space where you can meet like-minded people who may be going through something similar. That’s how people relate and gain lifelong friendships. It starts off with something mutual then grows into something huge. I met one of my good friends by just discussing how we lost our mom. We both had something in common and it grew from that. We would never have met each other if I never wrote a post about losing my mom. I can talk about my inner thoughts and whoever reads it reads it but trust me someone will and it could save a life. You don’t have to put your personal business out there but you can talk about things that can help others.
Make it a starter for something bigger. You can get into blogging and then from there go into what you really want to do. There are many bloggers who started off just like me who don’t even blog anymore but they have collaborations with Target or they started their own product-based business. You can start a fashion blog and then start your own styling company from that blog because you have gained trusted people who love who you are.
Start a blog and turn it into a book. I actually did this (I won’t share the book it’s horrible) I started my blog and turned some of the blog posts into a mini ebook and got a few coins. It wasn’t well written nor did I have someone go over it and check for grammatical errors but I thought it was good to me and I made about 1k from it. This is an easy way to see if your book will sell. If people comment and share your blog posts then you know they will buy your book.
You love to write. It’s as simple as that. Some people love to write and need that outlet. Be a voice this can lead to writing positions with other companies or you can even become a ghostwriter for others. This can also lead to you opening your own writing services or just to make someone’s day. Writing can be a great hobby just to put your thoughts on paper. You can even talk about current the news. People would love to hear your thoughts on Covid or what’s going on with stocks. Use your voice to help someone with tips and tricks.
Write to seek a community. I know for me blogging has brought me face to face with so many wonderful and beautiful people that I would have never met if it wasn’t for blogging. I mean I’ve met people who are now kinda famous and moving up in the world. It’s so good to know them from the beginning to see them shine and continue to be the same person (some of them). If you are in a new city you can write about your adventures and that can lead you to meeting others who may be new or others who want to show you the rope and invite you into their circle. We need people and blogging is a great way to meet those people.
Bonus
You get to learn new skills. This is huge for me because had I not started a blog I would have never picked up my camera. You see I wanted pictures for brands and didn’t want to pay others so I picked that camera up and created my own content which led me to open my own business. You can also learn how to be productive, self-discipline, graphic design, website design (learned that also), marketing skills, etc. I actually have a marketing degree and I myself have learned to use that degree on this blog and for my businesses and learn new tips and tricks in the marketing world.
Ok, so those are my reasons to start a blog that can lead to money but not be all about money. Writing can be just a hobby that helps you on your daily journey. I would also love to see some more blogs about business, maybe a dating blog, maybe a blog about small towns, a blog all about drinks, a DIY blog, etc. Just some ideas for you to start somewhere. Think about what you love and write about it. You don’t have to start something solely for money.

May 18, 2021 at 6:30 pmI wrote my first blog post in 2005. It started as a hobby blog, where I could write about family and home. It evolved over the years and that was a fun thing too.

May 19, 2021 at 5:51 amI keep a blog simply because I love to write. I still consider it a hobby and writing helps me relax. I just like I get the opportunity to earn from it these days but even without income, I will still continue to blog.

May 21, 2021 at 2:28 pmPeople wanting to start a blog should do so for the right reason and that is being passionate about writing. That will keep them going even if money is not coming in. Income from blogging is variable, sometimes there will be none.

May 19, 2021 at 9:08 pmThese are all great reasons to start a blog. These days, most people do it for money, but there was a time when blogging was the brave new world of online self-expression. Love this.

May 22, 2021 at 3:36 amI agree, it’s better to look at it as hobby first, so that you’ll be more passionate with your content hence money follows.

May 26, 2021 at 5:18 amI started my first blog almost 8 years ago. It’s crazy how quickly time has flown by. When I first started, I had a tiny niche site but felt it wouldn’t go so I merged that content to a parenting website that was fairly popular at one time. I wasn’t a writer in high school or college and my first posts were cringe worthy but I kept at it. I have health issues and it can be depressing so starting a blog was an outlet for me to share my knowledge to help others. I still use this motto today because I wouldn’t be successful without my readers.
