Our family traditions

Every family has a ritual. Things that they do on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. I wanted to write the ones that we did down just in case you might want to incorporate some of these into your own family or start your own traditions. I think family traditions can be passed down and even done differently as each generation comes about. My kids don’t have to keep our family traditions but I would love it if they do something similar.

Our family traditions

Selfie Saturday

I started this tradition when my hubs died. I wanted something upbeat for the kids and I to do that was fun. I also wanted to see how we grew each week. The kids are used to us doing this so every Saturday we do this. I do forget some Saturdays but I make sure we get it in. I also take the photo and put it on my home screensaver so I can see us weekly. As they get older I still want to keep the tradition alive. I will have them send me a photo every Saturday and then do a collage of them and me and then send it to them to have for the week.

Movie night

Every Saturday night is movie night. I shut everything down. My phone, emails, kids electronics, etc. We pick a  movie and we make homemade popcorn. The kids usually fight over what movie to watch so I flip coins if we all can’t agree. I don’t care which movie we watch as long as it’s good. Sometimes there isn’t a movie to watch that’s new so I will go old school. One Saturday I had the kids watch Sister Act and they asked was the movie made in the 60s smdh.

Photoshoot every birthday

My mom actually started this one for us. When my son was born my mom wanted a photo done every 6 months. I kept the tradition going by making sure my kids had a photoshoot for every birthday. Not only that they get to pick their theme and the photo goes with the theme. This year my daughter had her theme as glam leather (don’t ask me what that is) so I got her a fake leather skirt and we did it up. My sons theme was lime green so I got him a lime green cake and he wore lime green. I am even joining in on the tradition and doing one for myself every year. My birthday last year my theme was superwomen. This year I think I will do icy blue. Can’t wait to see how that will look. Since I’m doing all the photos I plan on doing a collage or a book when they turn 18 with all the shoots.

Try a new restaurant a month
Dammit, Rona. We always like to try a new spot to eat at once a month. I love discovering new spots to eat at and before Rona hit the kids and I would try out a new restaurant monthly. I would also blog about it and give you my take on what I liked and didn’t like about the spot. I did one on Negril village here in Atlanta a while back and can’t wait to do others.
Travel for the holidays
We travel for Christmas. I mean my kids don’t need a gift. Again this is pre-Rona so this will be the first Christmas we are home but I look forward to maybe bringing the traveling to the house hmm. Stay tuned for that. This is a tradition that I hope to keep up for years even after the kids get older or at least until they get married and have families of their own.
We say goodnight like the Waltons
We do like the Waltons most nights when the kids go to bed. We say each other names it’s something my mom did as a joke but I carry it on with my kids. We say goodnight Zaza, Goodnight Mom, Goodnight dman lol it’s fun and we’ve been doing it for over 5 years. We even include the ones we love into that like my mom, the hubs, my grandma, etc. I think it gives us a sense of having our loved ones be in our traditions with us.
So what traditions do you and your family do? What new traditions will you start right now?
