The day I met my husband

{AD} Most of you know that I’m a widow. My hubs died in 2016 when a tree hit his work truck. We recently celebrated his birthday on the 19th of March and my kids asked me mom how did you meet dad? At first I was a little apprehensive about telling them because I met him online and I am always preaching to my kids to never meet anyone online. Don’t give them any info about yourself, your name, where you live, etc. and here I am having to answer the question of how I did just that lol. I’m going to give you the conversation below and how you can commemorate your own special item that you can keep in your home that tells your kids exactly where you met their father or mother. Here is what I told my kids about the day I met my husband.

The day I met my husband

Dman: so mom you never answered the question. How did you meet dad?

Zaza: will this be a long story or will you get straight to the point because I have things to do

Me: *rolls my eyes* well it all started…

Zaza: Yep this will be long

Me: I was on college club a long long time ago when the internet was a little safer

Dman: Wait so you met dad online on an app. You always tell me I can’t talk to people on Instagram that I don’t know and you did the same thing

Me: In my defense, the internet had just really rolled out and people weren’t as crazy back then

Zaza: People are always crazy back then, now, in this house

Me: shhh. Now getting back to the story. I was on this internet site in a chatroom called College Club. I was talking to various dudes and your dad stood out because he looked like a nerd and I had never talked to a nerd before. I wanted to make sure I dated all types of men. We talked for a while and then he invited me to come to his black planet page

Dman: You mean the page before myspace waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy back in the day.

Me: Look it wasn’t way back in the day it was you know whatever….I went over to his black planet page and saw his picture but I didn’t have any pictures on my page

Zaza: Just like you don’t now…same mom huh

Me: *rolls eyes* anywho I thought he was cute and told him I was ugly of course he didn’t believe me. We exchanged numbers and talked on the phone for about 2 weeks and then he asked if we could meet in person. I was scared but thought maybe if I met him in a public spot it wouldn’t be so bad. We decided to meet on my campus of Clark Atlanta University (he went to Morris Brown). I met him and he was skinny. I decided immediately he wasn’t my type but was nice about it

Dman: So you basically judged him by his weight and didn’t get to know him as a person yet you are always telling us to not judge a book by its cover.

Zaza: but I remember you saying you put him in a headlock

Me: *I wasn’t going to mention that he came to my room because of course I don’t want my kids knowing this but the cat was out of the bag* Well yes I did he was suppose to bring me a copy of a CD and he didn’t so I put him in a headlock and demanded my CD

Dman: So basically you didn’t like him and then you put him in a headlock. Sounds like you are the crazy person that we should not meet online. So what made you decide to keep him

How I met my husband

Me: Well he was different. I can’t put my finger on it but he wasn’t the bad boy I  was used to or the nerd I actually thought he was. He was a mixture of both and I decided to continue to take his calls and then fell for him and the rest is history.

Zaza: Awwww that was so cute mom. What do you remember the most about that day?

Me: Me staring at him before I went to talk to him. He looked nervous but he showed up. That’s what I remember the most. He was true to his word and showed up and didn’t catfish me.

His death has been hard but having him be a part of our home is extra special. Our anniversary would have been April 2nd and to celebrate us I thought I would commemorate where we met by getting a map of where we met done and framed. You can get your very own personalized prints from Positive Prints. They have maps that are based on your sign, maps of your favorite place in the world, and even a birth poster that is customized just for you. I love that they customized everything even zooming in down to the spot I met the hubs. This will always be a part of me and I want to make sure my kids know how I met their father and how I will always remember that first meeting forever.

Some other fun ideas you can get these prints for

  • star map of a personal memory
  • your home state or where you live now
  • moon phase poster of the night you first kissed
  • birth poster to put in their bedroom
  • or you can be like me and get a where we met map of where you first met

These maps make for a great home decor piece or a unique gift to give to someone you love. If your anniversary is coming up this will definitely be a neat surprise for your significant other. Which map would you buy first? How did you first meet your spouse?

This was a collaboration with Positive Print. All opinions are my own!
