Best Burger Grilling Tips

Everyone wants to make that perfect burger and I have the best burger grilling tips to accomplish that! Not just how to make the burger, but what to serve it with, other ingredients to liven it up, etc. A lot more goes into a burger than just slapping some meat into a pan or on the grill. Let me share my burger wisdom with you.

Use the Right Meat

Of course, ground chuck or hamburger is the meat to use. However, having a meat that contains more fat will allow for more flavor and juices. This means you don’t have a dried out lifeless burger on your hands. You can also use ground turkey, ground pork, ground chicken, etc. to make your burgers.

Add to the Meat

One of the best burgers will have more than just hamburger formed into a patty. You want the flavor to be inside and out when biting into that burger. That’s why I will add seasoning to the meat before making the patties. I also like to add minced onion, garlic, and similar ingredients to really liven up the flavor of the meat. Here are some ingredients I use on the regular.

  • Paprika
  • Freshly Ground Pepper
  • Garlic Powder
  • Dried Chopped Onion
  • Chives/Green Onion
  • Diced Fresh Onion
  • Garlic
  • Bread Crumbs
  • Egg
  • Crushed Red Peppers

Cook it Just Right

Believe it or not, there’s a method to cooking burgers so they turn out better. It’s not just watching them and occasionally flipping them.

  • Get the grill nice and hot – Don’t toss those burgers on the grill until the grill is nice and hot. You want the meat to start searing right away. This means it will make a loud hissing noise as soon as it touches the grill. If it doesn’t, remove those burgers until it’s hot enough.
  • Salt the burger right before dropping it on the grill – Don’t salt your burgers or add salt to the patties before then. Add the salt right as you’re putting them on the grill for the best results. Don’t be afraid of that salt either. I like using coarse sea salt.
  • Don’t Overflip the Burgers – Flipping the burgers too often can make the fall apart or look rough. It can also take them longer to cook. Resist the urge to flip them a million times.
  • Don’t Uncover Them Constantly – Lifting the lid of the grill every minute or two can make the burgers take longer to cook. It also can make them cook unevenly. Resist the urge to lift the lid and look at them constantly.
  • Put the cheese on them after they’re removed from the grill – You can make a mess of your grill if you put the cheese on the burgers while they’re still on the grill. Let them finish cooking first, place them on a platter, then put the cheese on, and cover them so it melts well.

What to Serve Your Burgers With

There are countless condiments and bun styles you can serve with your burger. Some of my favorites are listed below.

  • Onion
  • Tomato
  • Lettuce
  • Mayo
  • Sriracha
  • Mustard
  • Ketchup
  • BBQ Sauce
  • Onion Bun
  • Hawaiian Buns
  • Cheese (pepper jack, cheddar, provolone, American, etc.)
  • Teriyaki Sauce

My husband is going to love these tips. Over the past few months, he’s gone from “cheeseburger guy” to “gourmet beef burger” guy. LOL

While I don’t eat meat, I can apply this to my veggie burgers. The toppings are what makes a burger great

What great tips. We also LOVE to add in chopped up bell peppers & jalapeno’s in our burgers. Sometimes even mushrooms. Gives us that extra boost of vegetables and flavor to the meat. Ohhh also feta & sundried tomatoes. yum!

Your tips for grilling burgers are all so spot on. My son loves grilling burgers but he always gets so impatient and flips them before they are seared/browned. Thanks for the tip about when to add the cheese. I will have to remember that next time we grill.
