Redoing my kids bathroom for under 5k

I am not a decorator…let me repeat I am not a decorator nor do I spruce up homes. I also don’t DIY shat. I wanted to tackle a room per month this year so that my home can stop looking like I just left my momma house. You know the look…nothing matches, cheap furniture, no decor, etc. Last year I did my bedroom and my dining room (more on that later) with the help of an interior decorator. It was a birthday present to me. That was expensive as hell so I decided that I would do the rest of the house myself starting with the kids bathroom. See how I did my kids bathroom makeover for under 5k, why it was so hard to find someone in the country and my tips for creating something when you aren’t creative.

I wanted to start with my kids bathroom because I thought it would be the cheapest to get done. I mean under 5k for paint, new shower door, floor, and tiles can’t beat that. My original goal was to spend 3200 but here is how that budget went left.

First lets start with how hard it is to find someone to come and do things when you don’t live within the city limits. I called around to maybe 6 different people and I got the runaround. I went over to my girl MJ house and found someone on the spot. First question I asked was do you come to the country? He said yes he said he did work all over…finally! Finally! Y’all don’t know how excited I was to find someone I could trust to do some work. He came over gave me a price. The total for his labor and materials would be under 3,000. My kids had a shower tub combo but they never used the tub and I thought it would be nice to just get them a reg standup shower. So I got rid of the tub, bought the tiles, and redid the fixtures.

I bought the tiles from Floor and Decor. I spent 2 hours in the store trying to match stuff. If you are not good with things like this here is a tip…find someone in the store to help you. If you can’t find inspiration off of Pinterest. If you can’t do that then pretend that the tiles are your outfit of the day and you want to impress your crush…then go in with the mindset that this is what I’m wearing and rock it out. It took me an hour and a half to think like that but once I did I put it together finally.

So the guy started and then we discovered the toilet was leaking. Let me back up…so my kids were telling me that the floor was wet for a few weeks. I ignored them thinking they were making the mess and told them that they needed to step on the towel or a rug when getting out of the shower. Little did I know that the toilet had broken which was flooding the tile we had in there which meant…ding ding ding. We had to replace the entire floor and the toilet. Give me a min while I cried as my money went down the drain.

Oh but wait it gets better. The sink part was leaning to the side (don’t get a new house y’all I’m telling you they throw shat together) so I had to get a new sink too. My budget went from under 3k to now almost 5k.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when doing a bathroom makeover

  • Patience. You will need it. My kids had to use my bathroom to take a shower for 2 whole weeks.
  • I couldn’t cook because they had to shut my water off a lot of those days so yeah….
  • Set aside a budget then add an extra 1k for stuff that might happen so you know you are covered just in case. It’s better to be overprepared than under
  • A lot of people say Do it yourself my tip is to get a professional if you aren’t the DIY type of person because that extra 1k might be used for real for real.
  • Reuse what you can. I reused the same fixtures I had, the same mirror I had and the same decor.
  • Look around for sales. The new vanity was on sale at Lowes that particular week and cost me half the price as it regularly would

Now let’s talk the shower door. I called around a few times for people and I got the run around for that also. Finally found out that Home Depot does shower doors. The glass itself cost me a lot so I held off on that until I made some more money that was not in the 5k budget. I got that the next month because that glass alone cost me over 1500 bucks. I put up a plastic curtain until I could afford the glass. Home depot did an excellent job of sending someone over to measure and put the glass in. I was able to pay installments with that so talk to whomever you need to talk to to get the job done on your price timeline.

Excuse their bathroom and clothes and stuff. I didn’t set this up to be a perfect bathroom this is how we actually live.

Overall I am pleased with the results and if I ever decide to sell I think a buyer will love the upgrades in the kids bathroom. Also if my kids want to take a bath they can use my separate tub.

If you need the name of my guy who did this send me an email and I will send you his info if you live in the Atlanta area. What rooms are you working on?

That came out really well. We’ve been talking about redoing the kids’ bathroom and our bathroom. If we can keep to a budget like that, we just might be able to do it!

I love the shower tiles. They’re super fun! Having gorgeous bathrooms really helps when it comes to resale for houses so if you ever decide to sell, I think this bathroom will really help!

This looks amazing. I have never had experience with remodeling or decorating anything. I am glad you put a price with it. It is less intimidating.

Very nice transformation. I love that it did not cost an arm and a leg. If I only lived in the Atlanta area, I’d be asking you for the information of the person who did the make over!
