Going Hands Free in Georgia with the Chevy

Cars are beginning to be more modernized. Coming standard with a backup camera and not looking like your typical mom car. My first run in with Chevy was when my hubs bought his first real car. I say real car because you know men they buy fixer upper cars that they fix on and it never really works. So his first real car that he had a car note for was a Chevy Impala. His entire family also drives all things Chevy so I am familiar with the brand. The other day I had the opportunity to test drive and preview The Trax, The Equinox, and The Traverse. I will get into all of those in a moment but I first want to talk about the new hand’s free law that’s coming up in GA on July the 1st. Chevy has you prepped and ready to obey the law!  Are you all ready?

Going hands free in Georgia

Effective July 1, 2018, pursuant to 40-6-241(c), all drivers operating a motor vehicle on any highway of this state are prohibited from:

  • Holding or supporting, with any part of the body, a wireless telecommunications device or stand-alone electronic device.
  • Writing, sending or reading any text-based communication, including a text message, instant message, e-mail or internet data.
  • Watching, recording, or broadcasting a video or movie.
Penalties:
  • 1st conviction – 1 point and $50.00 fine
  • 2nd conviction – 2 points and $100.00 fine
  • 3rd or more convictions – 3 points and $150.00 fine

In other words, don’t have your phone up to your ear while driving and please no texting and driving. Most people should have an earpiece by now but I still see folks driving around with their phones in their hands which is dangerous. Even the experienced drivers can miss something by not paying attention. Hook everything up to your radio if you can. If you have an old car like me (2006) then make sure your earpiece is in good condition and if you need to go somewhere and use a map have the map speak to you don’t look down at it.

Chevrolet has you ready by having you take control of your Vehicles Technology with MyLink

  • Teen Driver technology (I will need this in 4 years)
  • Turn by turn navigation
  • All of your music apps
  • Phone friendly for any phone (android and apple)
  • Texts message alerts to the screen on your vehicle
  • 4G wifi (as a busy mom I need this because my car can now become my office)

So let’s dive into some of the cars I test drove the other day

The Trax (I call this the college kid SUV)

Georgia goes hands free

Perfect for that new college kid in your life!

  • Easy to park
  • They can carry all their books and stuff in the back nicely
  • Great travel car for hitting the road to come home to wash their clothes
  • Perfect for zipping around town

This car was a bit too small for me but it’s perfect for that single person who has no responsibility

Equinox (The perfect car if you have one child or for grandma and dem)

  • The colors that this comes in makes me feel young again
  • The two-toned is what you want to get
  • Perfect for hauling things because the back lays down nicely
  • Surround vision to see all around your car
  • I got in the backseat and I’m a big girl so it’s great for those that aren’t skinny minnies

Did you know that this car is very popular in GA? My SIL had one and of course, hers was red.

The Traverse (My favorite for a family with the third-row seats)

I have kids so this one is perfect. It has the split seat as I call it on the 2nd row. I believe the correct term is the captain’s chair. I love this for kids to easily get in and out of the car. Most 3rd rows you have to move the seats and do so much, with this you can just walk right through the 2nd row and get out of the truck.

The hidden compartment or what I like to call the garage can lock. So if you want to leave your valuables in the car and give your car to a valet this protects it because they can’t get in without a passcode. This is so cool because sometimes those valet’s might snoop through glove compartments and I can now hide personal items in here without it being seen.

So as you can see Chevy has you ready for the hands-free law here in GA (and I do believe a lot of other states have joined in with this) With technology literally at your fingertips you don’t have to worry about ever disobeying the law. You can do everything without taking your eyes off the road. Safety is very important when it comes to Chevrolet and because safety is so important Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC have teamed together with OnStar to offer First Responders a special pricing plan. Yes if you are a police, EMT, 911 dispatcher, etc you can get a discount. This is amazing and it shows that Chevrolet cares about those that are the first in line to help us with any emergencies. So remember the Hands-free law starts on July 1st, 2018 and Chevy has you ready. Now all Chevrolet has to do is give me a vacuum cleaner standard with the car so I can keep my car clean with kids!

A few people asked me some questions from my instastory so I wanted to answer them below

What sizes are the trunks on the Traverse?

Max Cargo Volume (cu. ft. / L):

23 / 651 (behind third row)
58.1 /1645 (behind second row, third row folded)
98.2 / 2781 (second and third rows folded)

If you wanted to get an extra seat in the Traverse (it only sits 7) can you get that custom built?

The Traverse actually seats up to 8. Because Traverse is all about choice, buyers can select an available second-row bench that brings total seating to eight (standard on L and LS, available on LT).

I also need the size of the trunk in the Trax.

Max Cargo Volume: 18.7 cubic feet (rear seat up)

48.4 cubic feet (rear seat folded)

Which SUV is your favorite? Are you hands-free?

I have not looked at Chevrolet lately but they look great and the features as nice as any. It is the law not to hold a phone and it is a lot safer.

The Traverse is my favorite too. I love all the features. I wish every state had the hands-free law. I’ve been almost hit so many times by someone texting/driving and not paying attention.

MyLink sounds like it’s packed with plenty of great features for everyday use. My husband is in need of another vehicle. We totally need to check out Chevy models.

This is the prefer call for a parent who does not want a parent 🚗 car. I love the idea that it still make you feel young and with all the safety technology built in. It is a perfect transitional car from parents to kids (high school and college).

I will be keeping this car in mind. When it is time to upgrade.

Cell phone use and driving is really getting out of control. Most states have a law where you can’t but so many people ignore the law, kind of like speeding. We love our no hands car and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

That looks like an awesome vehicle and Chevy is always a reliable go-to brand. My husband just got a new truck and I’m amazed with all of the helpful features these days like parking assist.

I love all of these options! I really wished we could afford a newer car for myself. I’ve been spoiled a little while driving around my daughters car while she’s in training with the Navy, that’s brand new with all the bells and whistles when it comes to hands free. My car is an outdated dinosaur. (2002)

I live in Georgia too and my car is already ready for the hands-free law. This Chevy looks like a great choice for an upgrade though for when I need a bigger sized vehicle!

Since many people are getting busier nowadays, they don’t want to be caught up by police officers in the road when they’re using the phone while driving. Having a hands-free option is a great car feature.

I love how technology has changed the way cars are made. It’s really nice to see what Chevy has to offer, and thanks for introducing us to these three amazing cars. It’s nice to hear Georgia implementing this hands free rule, it’s definitely going to minimize the accidents that happen when you’re driving.

My husband has been planning on trading our Honda CRV and he is looking at Chevy. I will show this to him, I don’t think our state is ready for hands-free vehicle yet.

I’m getting my life together for this hands-free law in Georgia. I’ve had clip holders for my phone before and they only worked for a little while before they broke – which is disappointing.

Welcome to our world in the DC area, we have been hands free for years. Let me rephrase that, we are supposed to be hands free. I’m digging the secret compartment on the truck. That is so smart.
