Financial Advice for Recent College Grads – Money Worth Spending

Congrats to all those who have graduated. It is your time to celebrate the achievements that you have worked so hard to achieve. Be proud of yourself. Graduating from high school is fun but graduating from college……its a different story because now you have to put in the real world work. Here is my financial advice for recent college grads for where spending money is worth the investment

Financial Advice for Recent College Grads – Money Worth Spending

A bad to the bone resume

Microsoft word has some great templates but let’s move beyond that and have a resume that will get you the job you want and more. I would spend money on an online resume that showcases who you are and your achievements. With the internet being the first stop for almost everything in life…you will want to have a resume and website with your name. Of course have your copy to attach for jobs but also have your own website for that extra push. The website doesn’t have to be your name per se but make sure it has something to do with you. Even if you have a blog make sure it highlights your skills. For example, if you graduated from nursing school try to have a health blog or website that focuses on health. An online resume will put you ahead of the crowd. If you need help getting started with an online resume contact me and I will put you in contact with the right people to help you.

3 or 4 nice suits

The norm was a black or blue suit back in the day. Now I think you can practically get away with wearing any subtle color you want. I knew a young lady who wore blue pants with a beautiful gold blouse and she got the job the same day. If you want to go with some color add a pop of it by wearing it on your shoes or wearing a nice scarf. You can catch a great deal at Ross or even Goodwill for suits if you can’t afford one out of the fancy stores. Shop around for the best price.

A Coach

My friend is horrible when it comes to interviewing skills. He had a great job lined up, his resume looked top-notch, he was sharp, but his interviewing skills were bad. He fumbled his words, got mixed up with questions, and he was nervous. Hiring a coach can give you the practice that you need to get to the next level. Your hiring attitude is important and if you don’t have the right presence or attitude then you can hire someone to help you get there. A coach is also great to help you go to the next level when it comes to speaking and asking for what you want. Do I know a coach? You bet I do her name is Amber and she is the bomb.com.

grads spend money to increase employment

A Financial Advisor

This is one thing I wish I had spent my money on when graduating from college. Had I known the real deal about those private loans……I would be in much better financial shape than what I am in now. Those Private loans…..I knew I had to pay it back but I was under the impression that I didn’t have to until I got a job….it doesn’t work that way. Private loans give you 6 months free after graduation then after that, they want their money with high-interest rates. If you don’t have a job to pay it can get real ugly. Ask me about it. A financial advisor can also help you consolidate your loans, and tell you what to invest your money in for long-term security.

As a new graduate, the most important thing to do is to obtain a job or start your own business. When I graduated from college I didn’t spend my money wisely and lived life like I was still in college…wrong move. Spend your money wisely so that in the long run you can party like it’s 1999.

As a grad what would you spend your money on to increase employment? If you are looking for a gift to give a grade check out my post 10 Meaningful gifts you can give your grad.

I also wanted to give you grads some inspiration from 4 of the best commencement speeches that I have heard. Congrats again to all of you!

Yes to a financial advisor as soon as possible! I sure wish I knew back then what I know about finances now. These are all great ideas.

These sound like some great tips – I can imagine it is hard knowing what to do once you have graduated. What the next step is after being in education for so long.

Not sure they need that many suits to start off with. Two to begin and slowly add really nice cut tailored suites. All great tips good luck to all the graduates.

These are definitely some really good tips! The queen I was in college I do not know even what a resume really was. I obviously learned but I think everything you mentioned here are great ideas for someone that is just learning to live on their own.

I think making agreat impression during the interview is key to landing the job. I don’t know if coaching can gaurantee you get through it. The resume and the clothes are only important if they are bad.

This is such a great list and a topic I don’t often see discussed! Things have changed so much and it’s really important, now more than ever, that new grads intentionally set themselves up for success in the current job market 🙂

I think a financial advisor at a young age is a fantastic idea. I often think about how I wish I had sought advice from one when I was going through college.

This is great advice! I mean even in college financial advise can be necessary. No one ever taught me how to use a credit card and I was one of those stupid people who had no credit who got a $500 credit card and then I maxed it out because I had to buy four new tires for my car when two of them blew out and I only made the minimum payments. I was simply clueless and had no guidance on things like this. So I agree you need assistance so you don’t make the same mistakes.

Times are changing, and it helps to know what is a good way to aim for success. These all sound like useful ways to help increase your chances of employment. I had a tough time finding the work I wanted after grad school, which was a disappointment.

These all sound like great tips. I never went to college so this is out of my league. I did enjoy Oprah’s speech, I need to check out the others. I’m always down for inspiration.

Great tips. Most colleges offer career coaching and financial planning as free services to students. Definitely something I want my scholars to take advantage of.

That was a huge deal for my husband and I! We both spent a lot of money on professional clothes when we graduated! It made such a difference!
