Wake up! School is back in session

August 15, 2016

I have a huge problem with school…….I am not a morning person! I can’t stand mornings at all. I know they say morning people are the best yada yada yada but my brain doesn’t function good until 12:00pm. So with school back in session how do I get up and get out on time? It’s tough…last year when I had the hubs here the hubs would get them up in the morning and start breakfast then leave out to get to work. I got up but did’t really get up until he left and when I did I had to scramble to get moving so I could get the kids to school on time. My kids go to a charter school that does’t have a bus. It is the parents responsibility to get the kids to school so every morning I have to get up and take the kids. My hubs had to be to work at 7 so he never took the kids so in that regard he wasn’t missed. Taking the kids to school was always my responsibility. So here are some things I am doing differently this year to get up

Sleep in total darkness. I hate having the TV on I can’t sleep with any type of lights or noise. It’s one of the reasons I don’t like a lot of people staying over to my house. I hate that extra noise. I like a quiet house at night so I can sleep. This year I am going to sleep in darkness with no lights, no tv, and no noise.

I am not putting my alarm near me. So I have 3 alarms set in the mornings. One for 5:45, one for 6:00, and one for 6:45. It’s to ensure that I don’t miss any. Last year I had my alarms on my phone and just hit that off button but this year I can’t get up on that first alarm and go back to sleep so I am going to put my phone away from my bed. That way I have to physically get up to go and hit the alarm. Once you are out of bed…stay out. My problem was I would roll over hit the alarm and go back I never actually got up out of the bed.

Know what you are cooking for breakfast the night before. I know what I am cooking for breakfast the night before school that way I am not rushing around trying to find something. Here are some quick tips and breakfasts that we do. Cereal of course, eggo waffles, muffins (which I cook the night before so they are ready to go the next morning) bagels (I buy them from Panera Bread and usually buy 4 for the week), and pop tarts. I normally stop to Burger king or Mickey Ds once a week to get some sausage biscuits for the kids. It’s cheaper to buy them than to make them in the mornings. I cook a huge breakfast like french toast, grits, or pancakes on the weekends where we aren’t in a rush.

Schedule all of your important plans in the mornings. Since I own my own business I try to schedule fun things in the mornings so I can get up! It’s a drag when you drop the kids off and then have to come home and do the same things daily. I try to go to events some mornings and schedule to meet up with some of my local clients in the mornings over coffee (latte for me) so that we can get out of our offices and talk face to face. It’s something that I look forward too in the mornings.

Read a book before bed. I am currently reading Ask GaryVee it’s the best book ever and I normally read it until I fall off to sleep. It helps relax me and gets me wind down for bed. I am not checking my emails, Facebook, or scrolling through instagram. I actually have a book in my hand so that I can get my mind rested and not be full of the daily stuff for the day.

Drink a cup of tea before bed. I drink the sleepy time tea (the one with the teddy bear) on nights where I can’t fall off to sleep.  I try not to take pills because I am afraid I might get hooked on them so when I have a restless night I either get up and work or drink some hot tea.

Go to bed at a certain time. I am trying to be in bed by 11pm every night. It doesn’t matter if I actually go to sleep at 11 (which I don’t) but I am still in the bed by 11pm. I say my prayers and then turn off my phone and turn off the lights (*singing* Turn off the lights!) and I chill out and relax my mind. I think of all the good things for the day and then free my mind to relax. I don’t think about the bad…only the good! If my tasks are not done for the day it doesn’t matter. I still want to be in bed by 11pm. Make it a habit.

So are you a morning person or a night person? With school back in session how do you handle mornings?

I find that meal planning, and being IN the bed by 11:30 are key for me. ( 11 30 because i have to watch one episode of The golden girls…don’t judge me)
And I learned the alarm problem the hard way! LOL I need that alarm that is AWAY from the bed!

I know that charter school carpool traffic is just what you need in the morning! I am a morning person, like seriously, 1 alarm and I’m up preferbly to hit the gym then I have a better day. If I have to get up to work a morning shift tho, I’m a bit more sluggish. I am in the bed by 11:45 and that has been working for me with my new work schedule.

I’m not a morning person unless it’s after 730. However, that doesn’t work well with my work week. I get up before 5 am, 5 days a week. I need 30 minutes to scroll through my phone while in bed to check out social media while I was sleeping. Then another 30 minutes to get the furkids fed, out to potty, and play time. Then an hour for me to get my act together while letting the dogs out again and supervising playtime. Oy vey. I couldn’t imagine adding human kids into that picture. 😉

I hope you find a routine that works for you. I’m amazed that school has already started!
