The Benefits of Eating Apples

Let’s talk about the benefits of eating apples but before we do here’s a little story…

I love apples. I prefer them cooked to eating them regular and I know most people prefer it the other way around. My grandma made the best apple pie ever and I am so mad at myself for not getting that recipe before she passed. Even my mom couldn’t perfect that apple pie recipe so I was forced to come up with my own. It still doesn’t taste like granny’s but it will do.We love apple fritter waffles around here too.

apple picking

A few weeks ago we went apple picking at BJ Reece Orchards up in the mountains of GA. It was a two hour drive from me so we decided to spend the entire weekend up that way. We had a blast picking apples! To me apple picking is bonus to add to the benefits of eating apples. It was my kids first experience with apple picking and they loved it. We got to pet animals, drink real apple cider, smell apple pie baking, see various types of apples, and enjoy a bite or two of them. I suggest going sometime in October and make it an annual family trip.

The apple pie was the bomb. We bought one of each flavor and ate that bad boy that weekend. Yes pie is definitely another bonus to add to the list eating apples benefits list. Don’t forget to get some apple cider…my daughter said it tasted “very appelly”.

Be Prepared When You Go Apple Picking

  • Walking….the hills are high and the walking was a lot but it was great exercise
  • Your kids will try to eat the apples….be prepared
  • If you have little ones you will have to pick them up to reach the trees they always want the ones on top
  • There are a lot of bad apples on the ground make sure you watch your kids so they don’t pick them up
  • Check the weekend that you go because a lot of things may not be open for you to do

Going apple picking is one of the benefits of eating apples. the benefits of eating applies. _mg_1068 _mg_1087 _mg_1181 I think pies count as one of the benefits of eating apples.

My favorite kind of apple is the granny apples. The green ones are not too sweet and not too bitter so just right for me. What’s your favorite apple? Did you know that there are many benefits to apples. Let’s name some.

The Benefits of Eating Apples

  • Apples help with endurance especially when you are about to exercise. Try eating an apple before you go for your daily walk or go to the gym. Apples contain an antioxidant called quercetin, which allows oxygen to reach the lungs more easily
  • Contain malic acid which can be found in some teeth whitening. So my advice…chew down good on your apple and let it rub all over your teeth
  • high in vitamin C….an apple a day keeps the colds and doctors away
  • Apples contain compounds called triterpenoids, which may fight against certain cancers like liver, breast, and colon
  • Apples improve memory
  • Great snack for kids in the afternoon

I buy the packs for my kids and get them some peanut butter to dip it in. It’s a great snack for the kids and when they come home from school so hungry… I offer them an apple. This holiday season if you make apple pie let me know!

Will you go apple picking? Do you have anything to add to the benefits of eating applies list?

Great post, Kita! I especially love the pictures and the tips for apple picking. I’ll have to put this on my list of things to do. I’ve gone peach picking before in Tennessee. That was a lot of fun.

Granny Smith apples are my favorite. I can eat them cooked or uncooked. I didn’t realize that there is an apple orchard so close to Atlanta. I’ll be adding this place to my list fall weekend activities.

Sigh… all of these benefits and I can’t indulge. Why? Because I am one of the few weirdos in the world that are allergic to apples! lol Thankfully that’s the only fruit that gives me trouble. My line sister is allergic to apples and other citrus fruits. They taste delicious but the aftermath is just too painful to deal with. Insert sad face here.

  • […] 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg A sprinkle of lemon juice just a sprinkle you don’t want it with too much lemon Mix all of that together and then here is a tip. Cook the apples in a frying pan before you put it in the oven. I usually cook it in butter for about 10 min. (Cut just a tablespoon of butter) Then pour that mixture into the pie crust (I put a sprinkle of all-purpose flour at the bottom of the crust and shake it around)  Top the pie with the other crust. Mix a tablespoon of butter with some cinnamon and pour on top of the crust. Slit some holes at the top doesn’t have to be perfect but design how you want and bake for about 40 minutes on 300. (This is my oven other ovens may vary but keep checking on it to make sure it’s done) I bake it low because remember I cooked the apples beforehand so it won’t take that long to bake you just need to make sure the crust is nice and golden. This isn’t my grandma pie but this is as close as I will get. It’s easy to make the longest process is cutting up the apples into chunks. How do you make your apple pie? What do you add that I didn’t? Apples are healthy in a lot of ways. I wrote a post about the benefits of eating apples make sure you read it here. […]
