Aunt Flo: A Conversation With My 8 Year Old

My daughter is now 8 and my friend was like when are you going to talk to her about the dreaded Aunt Flo. What do you mean she is just 8?!?! My friend said nope they start earlier these days and she needs to know what it is now. I am not ready y’all. I am not ready!

The aunt flo conversation with my 8 year old.

My period came on when I was 11 years old. I have heard that some girls get it at 9 but I have never heard of younger than that. So…I thought I would have a small talk with her for now and then maybe next year go into full detail mode.

The Aunt Flo Conversation

Me: So Zaza do you know what Aunt Flo is? The period. The…

Zaza: I know what it is. It’s that time of the month that you put on your diaper (yes she calls it a diaper).

Me: Good. Do you know why I put on the diaper?

Zaza: To catch all the blood that comes out of your tummy

Me: okkkkkk and where did you hear this at

Zaza: On youtube…..if it comes that means you aren’t pregnant if it doesn’t come that means you had a oh oh

Me: Yes so you may start yours in a few years do you want me to show you how to put the pad on

Zaza: I will probably need tampons because I will be dancing won’t I? And how hard is it to put on a diaper it can’t be that hard if I know how to get on the computer I can put it on

Me: It’s not a diaper….

Zaza: It’s looks like one without the back part, you will probably need the back part ones when you are old and gray

Me: ………………………….no comment. I am glad we had this talk.

Zaza: Me to mom now when will we talk about all the boys that I like.

As you can see my daughter watches way to much tv and way to much YouTube. She also likes way to many boys… we gonna have that talk but I am trying to formulate a response without cuss words in it so give me a min

My daughter is growing up and she is into all the girly girl stuff. Some of the things she is into isn’t good for her skin because she is still a child. I am learning what works for her skin and what doesn’t work. Some of the things she buys from bath and body works seem to be harsh on her skin and I have to be careful about what I buy. I am so thankful for products that are just for kids. She can now lotion up herself with products that are specific for her age range.

A conversation with my 8 year old about Aunt Flo.

As she gets older I want her to use things appropriate for her age. She wears makeup but only when she has a recital. She wants to get color in her hair… the answer is no. Not until she is 16. Sometimes these kids grow up faster than they are supposed to and I want my daughter to know that real beauty comes from the inside not how you look on the outside. Who are you when all the makeup, fancy clothes, and smell goods come off? You need to be you and have things that fit your age. There will be plenty of time to be grown and trust me… it ain’t all it’s cracked up to be. Enjoy your youth while you have it!

I am glad I have all boys and this talk wasn’t necessary 🙂 I feel like I dodged a bullet.

I had never of the term “Aunt Flo” when I was growing up. It wasn’t until high school that a friend introduced me to the term and I was so confused, lol.

I remember having that talk with my three girls. It wasn’t my favorite conversation, but I made it through. How cute is that baby Dove! I love it.

I had the talk with all of mine at the same time – boys and girls. Mine insisted that I explain everything that she will need. She thinks ahead… LOL

I started my period really young, it was most definitely a bit of a shock, although my Mum had spoken to me about it prior. It is definitely a must talk about topic with girls.

Words literally got stuck in my throats, your daughter already knows these things? I was 14 when I had my first period and didn’t know shite then. I had to also laugh her calling a pad a diaper lol

Kids sure do learn earlier now than when I was a youngster. My youngest daughter started her cycle when she was 9 so she was more experienced in her knowledge about Aunt Flo than my 13 yo daughter who still didn’t have any idea of what was to come. It’s great that Dove makes products for kids. I know it helps them to feel more independent when they do things for themselves.

Seems like the conversation went pretty well, some of her responses were hilarious! I started at 9 and I hope and pray that my daughter starts later. Thank God I have YEARS before I have to have this conversation but I know time flies so maybe I should start preparing my mind NOW!

My youngest who is now 9 knew about it. Every time I brought the subject up with my oldest, who is now 11, she told me I was lying. I had to have my sister in law try to explain things to her because she thought I was making the whole thing up. Now she does want to discuss it at all!

I miss those conversations and Zaza…the boys. At least she’s not trying to act like she doesn’t like them.

I’ve actually never had the talk about that with my parents or anyone. The only way I knew about it was through school where it’s required. Wish I could have had the talk with my parents, so I would feel a litle more prepared though. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Zaza responses are hilarious! I have a 5-year-old daughter and I am NOT ready for the period talk, the TALK or boys. I recently (like a month ago) just stopped using baby scented products on her and I’ve been looking for something more “big girl friendly”, as she calls it! I will definitely have to try out the Dove kids line!

LOL about the youtube and the diaper! It’s amazing how much earlier girls are getting visited by Aunt Flo! I blame the hormones in food. It sounds like she’ll be ready when it does come.

Your daughter is very mature. I am surprised, well maybe not, that she said she learned about periods on youtube. I was wondering when I should have this convo with my daughter because my mom never did with me.

I got mine when I was 10 and it seemed like my mom had talked to me just in time. I had also read the Judy Blume book where the character got her period but that experience and mine were totally different so I was glad for my mom’s talk. YouTube is the devil! 😂

When we talk about this, things can get a little awkward. I think you have done a great job during your conversation.

i THINK THIS IS A MUST THING EVERY MOTHER SHOULD SHARE WITH HER DAUGHTER. WHEN I WAS OF 9, I GOT MY MENSURATION, AND I DON’T HAVE EVEN A BIT IDEA, CAUSE MY MOM NEVER TALKED ABOUT THIS TO ME. LATER ON, SHE REALIZED AFTER CONSULTING WITH THE DOCTOR THAT DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS IT CAN HAPPENS AT ANY AGE. SO WE ALL SHOULD MAKE OUR DAUGHTER AWARE OF IT. THERE IS NO SHAME IN THIS.

I’ve always liked the smell and feel of Dove products. I bet these do not disappoint. I remember girls getting their period at like 11, age 9 seems so early.

When I was young, discussing about Aunt Flo was not commonly done between mother and daughter. So can you imagine how I felt when I pulled down my panties to see that there was blood. I really thought I was dying. LOL. Glad that your talk with your daughter went smoothly.

I love using Baby Dove on my new baby. I have three daughters. My middle is 7 yrs old, and I’ve been very open and up front about having a period with her as she has been there when it happens with me and her big sister.

Zoe isn’t old enough for the full talk but we have been reading “It’s Not The Stork” as she does have questions about her body, my body, and her brother’s body. We are loving the Dove Baby line. We also love Cetaphil Baby. My kids have sensitive skin and eczema.

Well this talk is a part of a little girl’s life and a much needed one. I had the talk with my daughters, but I also allowed them to participate in the class at school for them to get additional information from a medical professional.
