Lunch food wasted + Wed Links

My kids use to get free lunch…there is no shame in admitting that. I am blessed that my kids aren’t on it anymore and that I can afford to send them to school with lunch….what we not gonna do is give lunch away to other churn….yes I said churn (it’s a geechee word I’m geechee)

Scene: (grocery store)

Little Boy comes says hi to me he goes to sons school

Son’s Friend: Hi you’re Dman moms

Me: Yes, hi

Son’s Friend: Are you buying grocery for Dman to eat. He gives me his lunch meat I like the honey ham can you send that one more often

Me: *blankstare* Say whaaaaaa

Son’s Friend mom comes over and says hi and chit chats with me about school and stuff. I walk down another aisle and call my child to see what the hell is going on

Me: *calls the boy*

Son: Hey mom are you going to buy me something sweet to eat

Me: Hell no what’s this I hear about you giving away your lunch meat that I send you to school with

Son: *starts stuttering* (this is how I know he is about to lie)

Me: Ah ah ah shat are you giving away your food to other people

Son: Yes, I just don’t like the pink meat you buy so I give it to my friends

Me: Why didn’t you tell me you don’t like the pink meat (the ham) you got me wasting my money buying meat you don’t eat. I send you to school with a packed lunch and then when you get to my car you so hungry it’s because you are giving away your food. If you don’t like something speak up so I can make changes. Do I make myself clear you got other people in this store telling me to buy a certain type of meat and shat

Conclusion: I use to pack my son the Lunchables but after I read some stuff about them not being healthy I started making my own Lunchables with deli meat and crackers. I have been buying him ham since last year thinking he was eating it and all this time he has been giving it away. He says he only likes the white sandwich meat I send him (the chicken breast sandwich meat) fine that’s all I am buying from now on. Mind you I have watched him eat the ham on many occasions….I asked him if he was being bullied and if they were taking his lunch because I know some kids do that but he says they aren’t he assured me that no one was doing that but I’m watching…..waiting……and will be asking more questions soon…..

I chuckled when I read this because my youngest does the same thing. I will found out MONTHS later that he doesn’t like something and was giving it away. Why not just TELL me so I don’t buy it anymore lol.

I think most kids have given away part of their school lunches before. It’s funny that he doesn’t like the “pink” meat and only wants the “white.” At least you finally know about it thanks to the recipient of the pink meat. 🙂

Haha, I know my daughter trades her lunch sometimes. I tell her to please not, but I’m sure she is. She does get Lunchables often though. She loves the pizza ones, but gives away the pepperoni.

I started making my kids’ lunches when they were in the 2nd or 3rd grade because they were serious at their food trade game and with school lunch being $3 it was money wasted.. 4 kids and everyone has their favorites and I don’t mind saving my money.

I’m so happy you saw that little boy in the store. Like you said you can’t be feeding other people’s kids too. I’m glad you got it worked out, and now sending your son to school with turkey.

Haha kids are so funny, he had to put in his request for ham. My little brother needs to lose weight and Ive been contemplating having him pack a lunch as I dont think school lunches are good quality. Funny post, good read.

Ahahaha….I remember working at the school, and when we had lunch room duty, there were always specific kids who would give away parts of their lunch! Why can’t kids just say, hey mom I don’t like this!

Totally cracks me up because I have had the same conversation in my house. My son was caught throwing out his sandwich and when the teacher asked him about it he started to cry. When I got home with him he told me he just didn’t like that kind of meat. I told him next time just tell me so that I can switch it.

Feel your pain and it wasn’t funny knowing your son was giving away his lunchmeat. Honestly I did laugh because we have all been there. Yeah for chicken meat.

Oh LORDT! Whenever we start to run out of something, before I buy it again I asked my son if he still likes it. He off lunchmeat right now and eating PB&J. My husband never eats the lunch meat – well rarely. But as soon as it’s gone he’s asking for lunchmeat. I can’t win with them. I too have done the major fuss about “why didn’t you say anything.” I swear I wish they would just make the grocery list. Going to click on the link about raggedy family members. It made me laugh. I’ll call somebody raggedy in a heartbeat.

Same boat, my daughter is constantly “sharing” her food. I am for her generosity but I also need the child to eat.

Oh my gosh this is hilarious! He’s putting in his order haha. My issue is when my kids buy lunch they don’t take all they’re entitled to.

I think we have all given away part of our lunch at one time or another. My kids can be very picky at lunch so I have to be creative with their food every day.

I can’t believe another kid asked you to send honey ham more often. I would have been taken aback for sure.

Lol this was too funny. I was definitely not the kid to give food away. I was super picky about my food so I spoke up if I didn’t like it.

I think it’s funny that your son’s friend asked you to buy more of what he likes. My oldest used to love lunchables when he was young.

You must have been so surprised when that little boy asked you to send more Ham. I get my Son to help me make his lunch. That way he can help pick put the things he likes.

Could it be a temperature or texture thing for your little guy? The same thing happened with my son when he was in grade school. He loved ham (or any lunch meat, really) when it was cold straight out of the fridge, but by the time lunch at school rolled around, warm ham just didn’t taste good to him. Food for thought? x

My kids mostly waste food because they are so busy talking and fooling around at lunch, they don’t have time to eat everything. I make my older daughter pack her own lunch, it is a good habit and then I know she is getting what she wants in her lunch.

My kids love lunch time but aren’t allowed to trade at their school. I dont think mine would as we make sure to jam it full of all they love but its cute hearing these type of stories!

But I’m stuck on the kid coming up to you and asking for his preference of meat. I’m sure my head would have leaned ALL THE WAY to the side because of that. I don’t like seeing children going hungry, but COME ON!

There’s something weird going on with kids and lunch. Just when we get into a groove of what our son likes to eat, he switches it up and decides he doesn’t like it any more.
I’m also surprised teachers didn’t catch the kids swapping food. That’s usually not allowed due to allergies.

I don’t think getting free lunch is a bad or negative thing, its a MONEY SAVING thing! I have one kid that eats lunch at school because he pretty much eats and loves anything, my eldest is quite particular and for the first year I am sending lunch with him and it’s driving me crazy. I really, really wish he would just eat school lunch and be done with it!

LOL!! This was funny. Kids are always trying to be slick. I’m so glad Tennessee gives all the kids free breakfast and lunch in the schools now. Saving us parents some coins.
