8 Tips on Saving on Christmas Décor

For most of us, decorating for the holidays is a must and it doesn’t quite feel like the holidays if we don’t. For others, decorating isn’t really important, which overall, I guess that’s the best way to save on décor. I kid, I kid. Anyways, Christmas décor can get super pricey which often times makes many of us either go light on decorating or festivities in general. There’s no reason to hold back at the holidays as it’s the one time a year going “ham” on being happy and enjoying oneself is allowed and normal. Decorating is one of the ways I enjoy the holidays and celebrate it so it’s hard for me to NOT do it just because it’s expensive. So, here are a few ways to still decorate without giving an arm and a leg while doing so.

Reuse Old Decorations – It’s definitely ok to put out the same decorations you had the year before. In fact, when I was younger, my mother cherished her décor and would wrap it up carefully each year and store it again for the next year. We never bought decorations unless a bulb went out on the lights and we had to replace it. It can be a fun tradition to reuse the same decorations.

The Dollar Store – Do not be ashamed to buy decorations at the dollar store. They have some pretty neat stuff sometimes! Not to mention, you can usually make your own decorations from the things you can find there.

Secondhand Stores – I have found some of my most treasured Christmas items at a secondhand store before. For example, I have a large nativity scene that I scored for $10. Let’s just say, in-stores, it’s well over $100 for the set.

Yard Sales – Throughout the year, people sell boxes of Christmas stuff for cheap. It’s really not a bad idea to be keeping out for decorations throughout the year to score a lot for cheap.

Wait to Buy After the Holidays – My husband and I used what we had or skimped by one year until we could score some decorations on sale. After the holidays, the Christmas decorations go on sale 50% off or more. This makes buying a lot of decorations achievable.

Craft Store Coupons – Most craft stores such as Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, and JoAnnes, have a consistent weekly coupon they put out for 40-50% one item. If you buy one thing at a time and take your time doing it, you could really score some neat stuff before the holidays for cheap.

Buy a Thing or Two at a Time – Make a plan on how you want to decorate and then settle for the cheaper versions because often times, they still look just as good. Then, buy one thing here and there to make the cost of it all, feel easier and less abrasive.

Make Your Own – If you have the capabilities, make your own. Spend $5 at Walmart for the plastic bulbs and then spend $1 on some twine and make rustic ornaments. Of course, this is only one idea. The possibilities are endless and you can usually make a lot for much less. For example, I made a wooden Christmas tree and it only cost me about $5 in supplies. In the store, the same tree was $40 plus tax.

Overall, Christmas is about spending time with each other but if part of enjoying the holiday is decorating, don’t feel bad for doing it and spending money on it. Use these tips to save and go at it!

These are all wonderful ideas! My favorite part of putting up the tree is recalling the memories of some of those old ornaments and the ones that my kids made for me. The family room tree is always filled with ornaments that have been with me for years. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

We do all of the ideas you shared and they are all great ideas. Watching my daughters accumulate Christmas decorations, I’ve remembered how expensive it can be. My favorite ones are the handmade ones which are full of memories. One of my favorite places to purchase tree decor is Big Lots because they have beautiful ornaments at affordable prices.

These are all great tips. Decorations should not be expensive, I agree with you on that. We get a few items every other year, but we keep some “heirloom” pieces. We still have some ornaments that my dad bought, and to think he passed away 24 years ago. They are the most precious of all our ornaments on the tree.

One of the big things that my family I do to decorate our house for the Holidays is always buy everything after the Holiday sales. That saves you ton of money and we just put it in storage and pull it out next year.

The dollar store is a treasure for the holidays. They have so much great decor and ornaments for cheap. At that price, I can afford to change the colors of my tree each year. This year I am going for pink and silver.

I found the coolest ornament at a flea market the other day. It was only two bucks and it was Santa sitting the the middle of a toy train. I just love it because my boys love trains.
