8 Tips for Gluten Free eating

I’m sure many of you have heard about the gluten-free diet going around. For some, it’s a fad and for others it’s a necessity due to their health. I had a friend who was diagnosed a few years back with celiac and it was a very difficult transition for her. To go from not really thinking about what you’re eating to having to analyze every little thing you put in your mouth is overwhelming. She found out that gluten was not just in a couple of things, it’s in most things which many people don’t know. Even if you don’t have to eat gluten-free, limiting how much gluten you eat can be a very healthy lifestyle change. Below are 8  tips for eating gluten-free!

8 Tips for Gluten Free eating

Eat Fresh – If you eat fresh foods, you will never have to worry about gluten. Gluten is mostly in processed foods so if you’re eating fresh meats, veggies, and fruits, you’re not only eating super healthy but gluten will never be an issue.

Avoid Processed Foods – Even if it says it’s gluten-free but it has a super long list of big word ingredients, stay away from it. This means that it’s still going to be difficult for your body to digest which leads to you still eating unhealthy foods as well as chancing triggering an issue if your health depends on you staying away from gluten.

Take food with you – Whether you’re going out to work or headed on a trip, pack your own snacks. There aren’t very good choices at gas stations or vending machines (if any at all) that are gluten-free.

Keep food separate – If your cabinets, fridge, or cooler have non gluten-free items, pack either a separate cooler or have a separate spot in the fridge and cabinets for gluten-free items. The items that aren’t gluten-free can easily contaminate the gluten-free items which can really stink, especially if you’re need to eat gluten-free for a condition.

Have separate dishes – Just like the food, you should have separate dishes for your gluten-free meals than you do for your non gluten-free meals. Scratches and spaces in the dishes can easily get food particles stuck in them causing contamination. Of course, if you’re only doing it as a diet and not as a serious need, this isn’t as important.

Avoid eating out – If at all possible, avoid eating out unless the place you go to has a special area where they keep the gluten-free food separate from the non-gluten-free. It’s very easy to get sick from eating out if you have a medical need to stay away from gluten.

Don’t feel bad for sounding picky – My friend used to feel so bad for saying no to people about food or for asking for specific steps to be taken so she didn’t get sick. She had a medical need to stay away from gluten so it was very serious that she took every precaution. Some people would get annoyed and not understand and she hated feeling like a pain. Don’t ever feel bad for keeping yourself safe.

Don’t chance it – If you’re not sure about whether or not something has gluten in it, just don’t chance it. Sometimes it can be hard to find information on an item making it a guessing game. It’s not worth it, especially if it makes you sick.

I have a few friends who either have celiac disease or have family members affected by it. They’ve had to go as far as replacing cookware. This is a great resource for people who have to eliminate gluten from their diets.

My husband’s chiropractor told him he needs to cut down on the carbs and gluten. Eating nothing but fresh and staying away from the bread is really key to maintaining good health overall.

These are wonderful tips for gluten free eating. I have a friend that comes over during our weekly bible study that is g-free and it challenges me weekly to create a meal that is completely gluten free. I never really new the struggles that a person with celiacs faced until I had someone close to me with it. Now I understand and it has opened my eyes to a whole new world as a chef and it’s made me better for it. Thank you for this post. I believe that more people need to understand this.

Thank you for this post. In a world of instant, like instant noodles, burger fries, and instant meat we also have an instant life, processed food really degenerates our life time and one way to prevent that is to go fresh! I mean fresh foods! I have a friend who is also suffering from celiac disease, she is very picky when it comes to eating and she always have a food with her whenever we eat outisde, I don’t bother to ask why and now I know! thank you for this post and would definitely refer this to her.
